Phoenix smiled to herself.
"Yeah. I guess it is. I was... sort of a mess, before." She shook that off, and glanced up at Ben. "But what about you? You gonna like being a bus boy?"

Phoenix glanced over at the bread and brightened. She hadn't realized how hungry she was.
"That's great," she said. "You can make a real career, cooking. I mean, if you want. If you don't, it's still a good skill to have. Useful. And the ladies will appreciate it."
She glanced back at the kitchen. "D'you mind if I have some?"

Halfway to the kitchenette, Phoenix turned, her hair settling around her shoulders.
"Mary?" she said softly.

"I am. But I'm also here to listen. If... you ever need."
She opened the fridge, beaming at the soup she found there, and heated a little up in a saucepan. "Do you want anything?"

Sometimes Phoenix only knew what he was talking about from the context. She took the soup off the burner, tore off some bread, and sat down to eat it. It was good, even reheated, and she appreciated not having to cook anything, since she only about three dishes and was getting a little tired of them.
"I bet you're tired," she said. "Don't let me keep you up."

Phoenix watched him over her spoon. And then set it down, and put her hand over his.
"What's the world done to you, Ben?" she asked quietly. "Why can't you be a hero?"

He trusted her.
He wasn't sure why, but he did.
"Ven I vas young, I vas diluted, I saw das vorld through mein dreams, as any young boy vould" he looked down at the book with wide eyes "it vas these thoughts that made me vant to become a rabbi. To vork vith das good und das needy, but-" he realized that there was no reason to hide it.
He had all ready allowed her name to come to his lips, and it wasn't as if he had properly mourned her. But why now? When he had all ready told her that he was okay? The memories where there now, there was no stopping them.
"-I fell in luf."
