*Merlin laughed and wrapped his arms faster around the little boy.*
"I'm sorry, lad. I have to hold on to you. Your mother would never forgive me if I dropped you in the pond. She loves you, and it will break her heart if anything happens to you."

*Gawain bounced harder, frowning and finally letting out a shrill cry.*

*Merlin sighed and looked down at the bouncing baby.*
"I'm not very good at this, am I? We both have to learn to live with each other, lad. Your mother loves you, but she can't be here right now, even if she wants to. But she will come in the evening. I promise you that."

"Pthhhbt."
*Gawain didn't cease his squirming, reaching for the water.*

Merlin moved closer to the water, without releasing his safe grip around the baby.*
"You can play with water all you like, lad. It's completely safe and won't hurt you. But I don't want you to drown. That's why I am holding you."

*He flailed his limbs and waggled his head, trying to put it in the water.*

*Merlin looked down at the baby, thoughtfully. He seemed very fond of water. A little too fond, perhaps. Was it possible to teach a baby how to swim? He stood up and carried the baby a bit away from the water, starting to study the green leafs of a tree instead. A blue bird chirped on a branch nearby.*

*Gawain frowned for a moment as he was pulled back but as soon as there was something else to look at, her gurgled contently.*

*Merlin showed Gawain both the tree and the chirping bird.*
"This is an oak tree, Gawain. And an oak can hide many secrets. You can among other things make strong furniture of it. You can also use parts of the oak in medicine. The bird you see there, is a bluebird. There are many birds at this fortress."
((I suddenly got an urge to bring in Abraxas, to see what Gawain would do to him XD ))

*Gawain gurgled and watched the man's finger as he pointed.*
((Matters not to me.))

*A black raven flew through the garden and settled down on the branch right above Gawain. He looked down at the baby with curious, black birds-eyes.* ((I couldn't resist ))

*The motion drew Gawain's attention and he pointed awkwardly in the bird's general direction.*
"Mmmthhhppt."

*Abraxas tilted his head and flew closer to Gawain.*
"Hey - you are new here. But... you must be Malefica's child, right? My name is Abraxas. I am an old friend of your mother."

*Abraxas flew over and landed on Gawain's tiny hand, careful to not scratch him with his claws.*
"It is nice to meet you. I am sure we'll be great friends."
