*Dewshine had just finished her talk with Malefica, and now she was in the garden, inspecting the flower beds. As an elf, she knew many of the secrets Mother Nature had to offer.
The sun shone down on her golden curls, and gave her fair skin a soft glow. Her bright blue eyes were sparkling as she focused on a flower she had never seen before.*

Walter passed under a large stone arch that led to the garden and peered out to look. Finally, after searching most of the fortress, he found Dewshine. He approached her with a smile.
"Dewshine, I'd like to speak to you. He stood before her, waiting to seat himself next to her until she answered."

*Dewshine stood up and looked up at him, with wide eyes, wondering what he had to say.*
"Yes, Monsieur Dornez?"
*There was a slight trembling in her voice, and an expression of fear and guilt in her eyes.*

He took her hand in his good one. He knew it would make her uncomfortable, but he wanted to show her that despite her own self, he was going to be there.
He looked her directly in the eyes. He didn't even blink.
"I feel a love for your mind and your body and your soul that runs deep. I want to be there for you. I want to help you through your pregnancy, through your grief. I want to help you raise the child. I want you to know you are not worthless or dirty, nor should you feel even the least bit guilty. Dewshine, no matter what you say or do, I am here for you."

*Dewshine cringed at his touch. She was sorry for reacting that way but she couldn't help it. She lowered her eyes, and a single teardrop trickled down her cheek.*
"I - I am sorry, Monsieur Dornez. I can't accept your offer. You have been kind to me, but I - I just can't."
*She broke away from his grip and turned to look at the roses. Her eyesight was blurred because of her tears. How could she ever explain to him that she feared being touched? And still, she had cared enough about him to bring him to the fortress instead of leaving him to his enemies. The situation was complicated, and she felt confused.*

He stood directly behind her.
"I'm sorry, Dewshine, but it was not an offer. I am going to look after you and the child whether you want me to or not."

*Dewshine froze, and her eyes showed fear, on the verge of panic.*
"You mean.... like a hostage situation?"

He frowned. She was taking this wrong.
"No. Dewshine.." he sighed. "I want to protect you. I want to prove to you that you mean something to me, that you have no reason to feel guilty or dirty."

*Dewshine wrapped her arms around herself. She felt... nothing. And that worried her.*
"I know that, Monsieur. It's just that.... I haven't known you for very long, and you don't know me either. And the girl I used to be was destroyed during the rape. My spirit is broken. And I don't know if I can ever feel again. You deserve better than that."

"You are right to say I don't deserve you, but not for the reasons you give, rather, because you are too good for me."
He stood next to her and knelt so that he was actually looking up to her.
"Please, let me be the one to help you heal your spirit."

*Dewshine looked at him, puzzled. She had not seen this coming.*
"Monsieur Dornez, if I didn't know better, I would think you were trying to propose to me. That is sweet of you, and I appreciate the thought."
*She looked down at him with a deep sigh.*
"But the only thing I has to offer, is friendship. I can never belong to anyone. Not after what has happened. It is better for me to live my life alone. You are too good to be hurt by someone like me."

"I accept your friendship whole-heartedly. Please, though, I want to help you. I truly do."

*Dewshine smiled, in spite of the darkness in her situation.*
"You already do, Monsieur. You have helped me more than you know. But I need time, a lot of time. There are so many things going on in my life, and I need to find out of it."

Walter wanted to push the issue. He wanted to scream at her and tell her to get it together. That any person on this earth would be happy to know her. Instead, he gave up. He didn't have the strenght. Without a word, he turned and left her to herself, alone in the garden.

*Dewshine watched him leave, and then knelt down by the roses again. One rose was fading, just like herself. Dewshine knelt down and took it between her hands, speaking to it.*
"It is better this way." *She whispered to the rose.*
"He will be hurt for a moment, but he will forget about me soon. Then it will not be so hard for him when I finally have to give in to the disease that slowly takes my life away. I am not afraid to die. I only hope they manage to save the baby."
*She started coughing, and pressed her handkerchief against her mouth. When she finally stopped coughing and was laying exhausted on the ground, her handkerchief was covered in blood.*
