*Someone had pulled in the crib that he and his sister had slept in as babies, but Kathleen Micaela, yet to be nicknamed, had already fallen asleep on her father--who was loathe to wake her. One arm held her to him while the opposite hand's pinkie was clutched in miniature fingers. He moved around the room, humming something that didn't make sense and trying to process the fact that neither wife nor child had died.*

Sorcha woke slowly, and then she was groggy.
"...Liam?" she croaked, rubbing her eyes and squinting.

*He smiled again and moved over to where she was.*
"Hi there."

Sorcha goggled a little as she saw the bundle in his arms.
"I...had the baby?" she guessed. "Wow," she said, sitting up a little. "...ummm...I thought I just fell down, out by the woodpile. Everything's a blur...I...thought maybe I hit my head."

"You almost died." *He said softly.* "The baby was breech; we had to call in a specialist who happened to be vacationing in Bath, according to whom, another birth would kill you."
*This was the short version. The fact he'd had to choose; the three-hour wait... those would be saved for further inquiry.*
"You named her Kathleen Micaela."

"Huh."
Sorcha let out a slow breath. She stuck her finger in her mouth and began to gnaw on her nails, her eyes darting from Liam to the baby and back again.
"So...are you alright? I mean what do you think? I mean...we're going to be alright, right?"

"Sorcha, an hour ago I thought I was going to end up with two caskets, and now I have a living wife and daughter. I'm so alright it hurts and I don't know why we would have any reason to not be alright." *He said with a soft smile.*

Smiling despite herself, Sorcha reached out for Liam's arm and dragged him to sit on the edge of the bed beside her so she could look properly at their daughter, reaching out a finger to stroke her little cheek.
"But--I mean...don't you fancy rich fellows want sons to carry on names and such? What'll we do? Let me die or give up on more kids and get separate bedrooms? Because frankly, I think I'd rather be dead, if that's the case," she said, tweaking his ear.

*He reached out the free arm to lay it against the side of her face.*
"Sorcha, you're alive, and that's all I care about. The specialist said something about a procedure and I'm sure he's staying the night; you can ask him tomorrow."
*He looked down at the tiny breathing bundle in the crook of his arm.*
"Besides, now I can raise the most spoiled daughter in the history of the entire world."

Sorcha's smiled widened to a grin, and then she snorted.
"Give her to me, now--she'll be no such thing. She'll be breakin' her baby teeth on rocks and getting up to no-good filthy fun like any good MacNamara."

"... and she will still be the most spoiled daughter in the history of the entire world. I'll just have to spoil her with... rocks. And mud."
*He moved to hand the baby to her mother.*

Sorcha took the baby gingerly, and the little thing squalled at being moved, tiny fists of fury batting at the air.
"Aye, yer Da has that effect on people, lovey," crooned Sorcha with a grin. "Drives me out of me mind, that man does."

"She was sleeping on me until you woke up." *He retorted.*

Sorcha was rather too engrossed in cooing at her daughter for a moment before she could respond. At least the birth and resulting exhaustion seemed to have mellowed her out a bit. For the time being.
"How long have I been asleep?" she asked, jiggling the baby gently.

"A few hours. They had to sedate you after the birth."
