*She smiled at him and reached up to lay her hand gently along the line of his jaw, feeling the slight rough stubble there as he insisted upon shaving himself and never got quite as close to the skin as he used to. She laughed lightly and ran her fingertips over his face for a moment before she made herself comfortable with her head pillowed in his lap, staring up at the blue sky for a while before her eyes drifted shut and she dozed off.*

*He smiled down at her, content to just let her sleep. His hand more over to place itself on her stomach.*
"Now you, behave yourself, else we shall have to have serious words when you decide to make your appearance. "
*He smirked before continuing.*
"And I will perhaps not have time to teach you useful things like riding if I will have to continually tell you off, your mother I imagine will not. So, let us settle that you shall be calm, and never marry. No, you will see my wrath if you bring home someone I do not approve of."

*Becca only half-registered the sound of his voice as she dozed, and her lips curved into a smile as she somehow realized he clearly wasn't talking to her. Their child kicked in response to its father's voice and Becca moved a hand to rest beside Philippe's.*

*He did not think she was awake, it would have been rather embarrassing to have her hear him speak in that way. He lowered his voice.*
"And you get here safely, and your mother too and I will be content."
*After that he removed his hand and lay back, to sleep.*
He could not tell it was coming at first, then, when he could tell it was past. Past for him anyway. It was a strange feeling. Whilst he wanted to stay where he was, deal with what was to come something else, stronger than anything he had felt before was calling to him. For him rather, for it was personal. He was certain no one else around him could hear it. That was fading too, the sense that he was where he was. But he did not mourn to leave, how could he when what he had to face was far greater than what remained? Besides, he would be parted from no one for long, that was the truth of it. A slow smiled crept across his face, for though he was going, had gone, what he would meet was what he had never believed to be true. Then he was gone and though no more in that frame, for he was himself and yet not. Though, the body remained.*

*Becca woke abruptly, some time later, a queer cramping ache in her back rousing her into muddled awakeness. She was cold, and a strange wind blew harshly through the forest, and she saw that the sun had much advanced across the sky, and it would be evening, soon. She lifted her head from where it had rested on Philippe's chest and smiled at her husband as he slept so deeply.*
He must be exhausted...
*She leaned forward to kiss his temple with a giggle.*
"Are we going to camp here all night?" *she murmured into his ear, laughing.* "I'm getting cold; and you must be--"
*She had taken one of his ice-cold hands in hers before she stilled and fell silent, dreadful reality washing over her in a hot, prickling wave of painful fire that brought her into utter agony that almost became numbness.
She lay back down beside him in silence for a long while, her grief too deep for tears as she cradled his head against her chest and held his lifeless hands against her belly where their baby still kicked vigorously.*
"Philippe...you're going to--you've got to...you're going to be a papa...Philippe...I can't be alone like this...it's too soon. You've got to come back to me. Philippe--I know you can hear me..."
*Her voice broke and she broke with it, hunched over the body of her husband with a strange, eerie, wordless keening coming from her lips.*

*It was almost evening, Clarisse looked out of the window, a strange dread filling her. She turned to a servant.*
"Please, could you go and check on the Comte, it is late."
*The servant nodded and left the room.*

*In her pain and distracted grief, Becca barely noticed the building pressure in her body until it was too late for her to seek help on foot. Alone, and in agony, she screamed aloud.*

*Raoul rode through the woods towards the estate. He was going home. As he reached the field next to the house he slowed his horse.
His brother and wife, naturally. A grin spread over his face.*
"Honestly- can you just..."
*Something was wrong, he could tell. He swiftly dismounted.*
"What has happened?"

*It only took him a moment to realise what had happened. He knelt down by his brother, his face numb with shock. He had not even known he was- his own brother. Despite everything else that had happened he had not though of this.*
"Come, we must get-"
*Then he registered what was happening to her. He paled still further.*
"No, you have to get to the house."

"Well, you can hardly stay or you'll die here too."
*He replied, a note of hysteria creeping into his voice. Just then, more servants including Philippe valet arrived. They had with them a cart. Raoul turned back to her, trying to maintain a semblance of calm.*
"See, he is coming too. Come now, please."
