*Sinclair sank down against the wall. Stupid managers, he was only a little drunk. Idly he began to pick up stones and throw them against the opposite wall. This was rubbish, he should be somewhere with the rich. But no thanks to his father he was stuck like this.*

*Guido Brunetti was on his way home from work, when he noticed a young man sitting in the Gutters. He seemed.... lost. Guido's warm heart filled with compassion and he approached the man with a friendly smile.*
"Good evening, sir. I am chief inspector Guido Brunetti from the police force of Venice. Do you need assistance of any kind?"
*His voice was warm and caring, with a slight Italian accent in the language.*

*Sinclair looked up. The Police, that was not good.*
"I'm fine Officer, no problems here Sir."

*Guido looked warmly at the young man.*
"Are you sure?" *He asked friendly.* "You're sitting in the gutter, and it's a terribly cold night. You might get sick if you sit here. Do you need a ride home? Or somewhere to stay?"

"I haven't committed a crime!"
*He blurted out.*
"I don't need to spend the night in the gaoul."

*Guido smiled and looked friendly at him.*
"Relax, pal. I don't say you have commited a crime. I'm only ask you if you need a place to stay for the night. It will be cold tonight, and I don't want you to catch your death out here."

*Sinclair looked a little suspiciously at him.*
"I do need a place to stay, I was at the Opera but-"
*He shrugged.*

*Guido eyed him friendly and smiled.*
"You look like a strapping young man. Would you like to join the police force? We always need an extra hand."

"The police force? I'd never-"
*Well, of course he couldn't. His face, which had been interested closed up again.*
"I don't think you appreciate the help of a drug addict."
*He smiled bitterly to himself.*
"Especially one who can't even write."

*Guido looked at him and smiled.*
"Let me tell you something, son. You don't have to be an angel to work in the police force. In fact, angels do bad in our business. A friend of mine grew up in the streets, the son of a whore. He lied, stole, and did a lot of things that he shouldn't have done. But when he grew older, he joined the police force. He stopped stealing, lying and all the other stuff he had done previously. Today he is one of the best Captains in the police force. We call him Lucky."
*He placed his hand on Sinclair's arm.*
"I want to give you the same chance Lucky got, when he was where you are today. In the police academy, there will be a lot of hard work, but you'll get free food and lodgings, and even some payment for what you do. Now, what do you say?"

*Sinclair looked up at the man. He actually seemed to want to help him. It was a strange feeling. After a few moments thought he smiled timidly.*
"Fine, I try it. It can't do any harm to anyway."

*Guido smiled warmly, wondering why a nice young man like Sinclair was out in the gutter, alone like this. He thought of his own son, Raffi. He would never had accepted anything like that happening to him.*
"Please come with me. And don't worry about the writing. I can teach you what you need, and the rest we can probably hire a secretary for."

*Sinclair nodded, his usual frown back on his face. Still he followed where the man led.*
