*After an anonymous tip, the coast guard sped down towards Manderley, eager to find what could be found. They'd all been stumped by the Rebecca de Winter case but now, armed with new information and a new sonar system, they were ready to find Je Reviens. Some planks had washed up on shore at Manderley; that meant that the boat had to be pretty close. In-the-bay kind of close.*
*After clearing it with the higher-ups, they knew that they'd be allowed to search the bay, and with the new sonar system, it didn't take long to find.*
"Bet that Max de Winter'll be glad to hear it, eh, Bill?"
"Bet my last penny, Harry."
*They sent a diver, Tom, down to be sure, but a craft of this size was fairly unique among wrecks in the area. When Tom reached the boat, he immediately knew it for Rebecca's. There were a few pieces missing, but altogether it was staying in one piece nicely and he was sure that they would be able to bring her up now that she'd been found. It was quite routine, actually; find the missing boat, bring it up, have the shipbuilder look it over, send what lumber could be salvaged to the lumberyard and throw the rest away.*
*What was not routine was that, while he looked through the cabin porthole, there was something there. Something vaguely human shaped, something that had once been clothed but which now only had ribbons of cloth hanging off what appeared to be bones. Had he not been underwater, they would have heard him screaming, terrified of the body. Hadn't they found Rebecca? Who was this? He made for the surface as fast as possible, too scared out of his wits to take a closer look.*
*Once he got to the surface, he took great gulps of sea air as if rescued from drowning.*
"The boat... the boat... Rebecca..."
"Spit it out man! Was it hers?"
"The boat... it was Rebecca's, all right... but Rebecca..."
"What is it!? In God's name, what is it!?"
"There's a body down there!"
*Of course the de Winters had t be informed. They hadn't realized there was a party going on, but this was far more important. There would have to be further inspection in the morning, an investigation and an inquest later on... when Tom, Bill, and Harry climbed back on the coast guard boat to return to the station, they didn't realize that they had just changed everything.*
*Rebecca had come back to haunt Manderley.*
