*The modern furnishings were rather interesting, but lovely nonetheless. With a practiced air, she arranged the room to her own liking and happily bustled about putting away her things. Things were going swimmingly, and she was in an excellent mood*

*Richard explored his rooms. Nice. Modern. He was still enthralled by indoor plumbing, even though he'd never tell anyone that.
Too many doors, though. Closets, balconies...*
"A thousand pardons!" *he cried, the last door he'd opened having led into Marie's room. He looked between them, his face coloring.* "What abomination is this, to place us in rooms adjoining and connected?" *he asked the world.* "'Tis an insult to your highness!"

*She was both surprised and secretly pleased at this turn of events. Of course, the only feeling she showed was fluster*
"Oh, my! Er, perhaps their idea of propriety is different here in modern England?"

"Do men and women exchange rooms freely, then?" *he asked rhetorically. Then another thought dawned.* "Or might our hosts, judging by our arrival and like understanding, think us coupled?"

"That could be it," she said reasonably.
"Though one should have caught it that it was not so by the way we were introduced."
Or, more bluntly, the lack of introduction Richard got.

"Indeed," *he grumbled.* "Perhaps they think me a servant and eunuch, then. By any light, it is an affront to your majesty. I will rectify it at once."
*Coupled. Had he dared say it aloud? She had both rejected the idea and shown no disgust.*

"I'd certainly say they are wrong about you, if that's their view." She said, one corner of her mouth turning up in a smile.
"Oh, but you needn't bother them. I'm sure we can make do as things are." She said casually.

*Richard stared at her a little more openly that he thought proper.*
"It should be no bother, madam, to see you comfortable and habited in accordance with your worth."

*Something sly appeared in her eyes, but then it was gone*
"I would actually not mind things staying as they are right now."

*Richard was not stupid. But neither was he prone to assuming women had their own minds when it came to things like... well, things.
Still. He couldn't muster up strenuous objection to the state of affairs as it was. Not if she didn't.
In fact, it might prove advantageous.*
"As you wish, your highness," *he said.* "I know full well how untutored I am in the ways of this time, or yours."

*She gave a dry chuckle at his words*
"Oh, I'm certain people in my time would have been properly scandalized, but I care not for them. We are somewhere far more modern...it might make things easier for us to try and blend in a bit more."

"A fair thought, your highness. And what is your plan here? The guests seem noble enough, but the circle of influence has altered since my time, and the crowd mixes most unexpectedly."

"I suppose we could continue the view that we are a couple. Eyes don't bat it this, if my judging of the crowd is anything to go by. Title...does not seem as important, though riches still matter a great deal."

*Richard inclined his head.*
"If such would please your majesty by providing aid to our eventual triumph, I bend to your will," *he said, secretly calculating just what he might get out of this.*

*She smiled, nodding back*
"I think this will greatly work to our mutual advantage."
