*For lack of anything to do, Johanna had stolen her brother's pillowcases and was embroidering them with his monogram. The light behind from the window penetrated her gown shone on her face and illuminated her work and hair. She appeared to have a halo of pale gold about her as she concentrated on the embroidery. She was visible from the street as she worked, unknowingly beautiful.*

**NEW DAY**
*It was an immensely boring afternoon, and she'd read all of the books in the house except for her mother's travel ones, which had always looked thick and boring. She attempted to avoid picking them up but after a while, embroidering got boring, and so she picked out a book on Bavaria to tide her over. At least it was something she hadn't read yet.*
*To her immense surprise, the language was engaging, the illustrations above average, and she found herself imagining the cool, deep-green forests, the mountains, the lakes and the fairy-tale castles--more importantly, herself at and in those places.*
*It didn't take her long to power through her mother's books, only really to do with Europe, and felt herself longing to read about everything--the jungles of South America, the vast, dry Sahara and the African grasslands, the dunes of the middle east and the exotic wonders of China and Japan.*
*She set off for the bookstore.*
