*Guido sighed. He hated to make women cry. If she had been a child still, he would have put his arms around her, trying to comfort her. But this young woman in front of him made him unsure. Her beautiful face and firm young body didn't do the case any better.*
"Well, at least we are working on the case. I could offer you a course in self defense, now that you seemingly are old enough to join it."

She shook her head again, still refusing to look at him, and said, "I don't want to."

*He sighed and looked over at her, not quite sure what to do. His mother and sisters back in Italy had never behaved like this.*
"Then what do you want, signorina?"

She turned and looked at him, smiling hopefully.
Then she giggled to herself and looked away, wiping the last of her tears from her cheeks.

*Guido looked at her, not understanding how a woman could shift that easy between tears and laughter. But he also felt relieved that she didn't cry anymore.*
"I just want to see you safe. I feel responsible for you, since I am the one who found you."

"I don't need to be watched over ever second," she told him, raising an eyebrow. "I'm not a little girl anymore."

*He looked at her and sighed.*
"I was afraid you would say that." *he muttered.* "That means my eyes are not betraying me."

"Oh?" She asked, smiling at him just a little.

*He sighed heavily and rubbed his temples.*
"I have noticed you don't look like a child anymore. But I still think of you as one. And that is the problem."

Her smile vanished.
"Why is that a problem?"

*He sighed and looked at her with a smile.*
"If you really had been a grown woman, and not the little girl I still see in you, I would have asked you out on a date. Knowing you are a child makes it difficult for me to do that. I am a police officer. I work with protecting children, not dating them."

"But I'm not a little girl anymore!"
Her eyes turned glassy again, and her face was pink with embarrassment.

*Guido looked at her and sighed.*
"Your body is not a little girl's. But how about your mind? Did your mind grow up just as easy as your body?"

She pouted.
"There's no way you can prove that it didn't!"

*He smiled and looked her into her eyes.*
"And you, my little friend, can't prove that it did."
*He trailed a fingertip carefully over her pout, with a glimpse of humor in his eyes.*
"Not with that pout anyways."
