"Thank you. May your health be better than mine."
*María quickly emptied her glass of wine, and her hands were trembling as she put her glass back on the table.*

*The girl just nibbled at her food, a bit out of her element.*

*María noticed the silence and tried to laugh it off.*
"Well, at least it is a wonderful night! The full moon is up, the flowers are blooming, the nightingale is singing. If I had been the romantic kind of girl I would be standing starry-eyed in the window now, waiting for prince Charming."

*She looked up from her plate, a little confused.*
"I suppose...that is one way of looking at it."
*Her gaze shifted back, then returned to her plate.*
"Though perhaps a rose-tinted one."

*María smiled and looked down at her plate, focusing on her food again.*
"I agree. I have seen too much of the dark sides of life to have any illusions left. The irony of it all - I haven't even been with a man before I lost these illusions."

*The girl paused, looking unsure.*
"What does a man have to do with it?"

*María startled and looked around, nervously. Then she lowered her voice in case someone might hear her.*
"I am haunted."
*She whispered.*
"I seem to be a magnet for ghosts, demons and evil spirits. They are chasing me everywhere."

*The girl didn't seem at all surprised or put off by the revelation.*
"Yes...but what does that have to do with your man-troubles?"

*María startled again and looked around nervously.*
"Man-troubles? But I have never even kissed a man! Not even thought about it, or wanted to."
*She sighed.*
"I have been haunted since my childhood. It started with Sir Wilbur, one of my ancestors that fell off his horse and broke his neck some centuries back. He started showing up in my dreams, chasing me on his horse. I always dreamt that the horse was running over me, and woke up to the sounds of my own dreams.
Then there is this.... this....evil spirit.... Astaroth... He is there... all the time... tormenting me... torturing me.... never giving me peace..."
*She looked up at the girl with an excusing smile.*
"So you see.... being haunted like this, I haven't wanted to pull other persons too much in to my life. I cannot burden them with my problems. So my life is a lonely one."

*The girl grew uncomfortable again, squirming in her seat.*
"And you expect...what from me exactly? That we share a burden so I might...what?"

*María looked back at the girl with a friendly smile.*
"Ah, nothing, my dear. I just needed someone to talk to. I didn't even realize we do share a burden - do we?"
*Her eyes showed friendly interest for the girl.*

*The girl frowned.*
"Not exactly."
*She pursed her lips, studying the lady.*
"So...you keep to yourself because you don't want to burden others with this terrible suffering you bear, except when you pick up the random street urchin looking for companionship?"
*She looked confused.*

*María sighed and looked back at the girl. She had never been good at explaining herself, isolated as she was.*
"No, that was not what I meant! That sounded absolutely horrible. It's just... you have been the only kind person I have met today... except the man that helped me to my box seat at the opera, but he had something frightening over him even if he was polite. You have no idea how much it warmed my heart when you gave me that flower."

*Her brow lowered, a little disappointed with herself.*
"Most people don't appreciate it like that...they think I'm mad."

*María arched her eyebrow in surprise.*
"Why would anyone think of you as mad? You have only been sweet and charming."
