Edward dashed to the door excitedly, for no one ever knocked unless they were there on business, and no one ever came on business. He opened the door with more speed than politeness, gazing out with a wide smile at... nothing. At regular person-height, there was no one, and he fleetingly thought of the Opera Ghost and...
His gaze trailed downward until it lit on the small person standing there. And his smile, if possible, grew even wider.
"What a perfect face,” he murmured, as if to himself. Then he seemed to focus. "May I help you?"

*Mary heard footsteps, and prepared her charming manner. She would, at least, make a good impression, she hoped. Naturally, she was not surprised when the (presumed) director happened to overlook her, but when he did spot her, she gave him her most sunny smile in return.*
*His words were what took her by surprise, but certainly in a good way--she hadn't heard that in years.* "Good morning, sir," *she replied, clasping her script to her chest.* "I'm Mary Dahl, as you may know, and I had heard there was a director in town. I'd like to discuss business."

Ed didn't know, actually, but that rarely stopped him from being impressed by a convincing attitude. He beamed.
"You've come to the right place," he said. "Edward D. Wood, Jr., at your service. Come in, come in!"
He opened the door wider, to admit her.

"Thank you kindly." *Pleased, Mary nodded, her sweet smile not leaving her face, and almost sauntered into the studios, glancing around. Not much to look at, but that was okay. After all, some of the best directors had worked in some of the worst conditions.*

Wood's studio, was clean, but cluttered. He'd amassed what discarded equipment he could--the ahead-of-its-time movie equipment, he had no idea where it had come from. But bits of sets and a rack of costumes and, behind a curtain in the corner, a bed, all vied for space. Edward cleared off a seat--his furniture did not match, drawn as it was from various productions, and this one was a sort of throne--and offered it to Mary.
"So what can I do for you?"

Far from being put off by the clutter, Mary was actually relieved by it. It reminded her of the back hallways in Gotham Studios, where she'd had so many happy memories, and it seemed to suggest that she really would be coming back to it all. Smiling at the sight of the seat offered--appropriate, no?--she sat down and gingerly smoothed out the many papers in her lap.
"Well, I have here a script," she replied, holding it up to demonstrate. "I've written it myself. Took me years. It's the story of Jezebel...and I was hoping you could help me make it."

((Oh man, I'm having total Sunset Boulevard vibes.))
Edward's spirits fell slightly. She'd finished a script? At her age? And he had yet to make his Citizen Kane.
But maybe this was it.
With no sign of his bitter thoughts--they weren't directed towards her, but himself--he nodded. "You're a very serious young woman," he said. "I like that. I'm sure we could work together on this project; I usually write and direct both, but for a good enough script I'm happy to forgo that pleasure. Did you have someone in mind for Jezebel?"

((Oh, it's intentional. I love the film.))
Of course, Mary had assumed that he'd heard of her, as he had said nothing earlier, and didn't realize that he thought she was as young as she looked.
She smiled at that, and leaned back slightly in the chair. "Very kind of you," she replied warmly, stretching a little. Oh, she hoped it would be good enough. This was to be an important film, after all. His question, though, did surprise her a little. "Why, me! Who else?"

Edward looked her over again, his smile never faltering.
"Well," he said finally, "I think it's an excellent idea! Completely unique!"
He clapped his hands together, rubbing them excitedly. "We'll need funding, of course. Is that the script, there?"

Mary was struck by just how very nice he was being; this time, it didn't even feel like flattery. She smiled back broadly, and reached up to fix her hair.
"I'm certainly glad you like it," she replied, leaning forward again. Now that they were actually discussing starting her career up again seriously, she had gotten excited as well. "Oh, naturally...I can supply some, if necessary. Yes, here it is," she added, holding the (rather thick) script out.

((They're absurdly perfect together. Poor Ed is so clueless.))
Edward's eyes lit up, though whether at the prospect of actually funding a film or reading the script could not be determined. He accepted the script, surprised by the weight of it (and wondering how the girl lugged it about).
"Where can I get in touch with you after I've read it?" he asked.

((He's clueless and she's deluded--yeah, won't they be a fun couple? Haha.))
Mary was stronger than she seemed, as a matter of fact. What's more, she'd had quite a lot of time to work on it over the years. She was happy as well, and her young-looking face was practically glowing. For the first time in a long time, she really had a chance; she had hope.
As to contact information, she mentioned that she was staying at a nearby hotel, and gave her room number.

Beaming all the while, Edward thanked her for her time and assured her that she could count on him. And that he'd get back to her soon.
"And you can nearly always find me here," he reminded her. "So happy to have met you, Miss Dahl."

Mary nodded brightly, her expression making her as cute as she had ever been. "No, thank you," she insisted cheerfully, and slipped off the chair. "Really, the pleasure was all mine. And I'll see you then!"
Humming the Ode to Joy quietly, she turned and left the room. That had gone better than she had expected, actually.

Once she had gone, Edward fell to reading. It was slow going at first, what with the childish handwriting, but once he got into it he hardly noticed. It was brilliant--it had punch in just the right places, which was to say nearly everywhere, and the girly, sensitive stuff was always followed up by lots of shouting and drama.
Edward thought it could be quite something, in the right hands. Namely, his. It was missing something, of course, but she couldn't be expected to do it exactly right first time out. He'd speak to her when he accepted the job about some additions.
