"Young. The few humans I do talk to, they always seem to expect me to be some ancient thing that's been roaming the earth for centuries. They always look so crushed when I tell them different." He said with a wry smile.

"Mm, no. No. Being anything that's - you've cheated time. It's brilliant."
He was staring at him in probably the closest thing Ghislain came to religious awe, with his usual penchant for mixing religion and sensuality.

He tilted his head to one side, watching Ghislain's face.
"One cheats a lot of things as a vampire."

"Oh? What else?"
He didn't realize it, but he was curling up closer to Daniel, looking at him intently.

"Injury, illness. None of those things are a concern. The only worry I have anymore is fire or the sun."

"And there are a lot of those? I've never..."
He cut himself off and continued thinking.

"Oh, you know. Such and such chorus girl or musician was drained or near-drained. I think most of them are allegorical. Sexuality in general for the ladies and homosexuality for the boys. You don't go around biting Opera-goers, do you?"

"Oh, that's lovely," he said, with a shark's smile, which was nevertheless a sincere one. "What do you like to read?"

"Oh, this and that. Mostly newer books these days since I've gone through a lot of the older works. With a few I re-read once in a while."

"All the time in the world spent in a library..."

"I like books." He said defensively.
"And I don't spend all my time there. I'm not there now."

"Oh, I'm not complaining. About any of that. I like books."
