*Nessa looked up at him smiling.*
"No, of course not. We have soul mates. They are hard to find, and we have to search for them before we find them, but once we find them, we stay with them for the rest of our lives. And if they die from us, we die with them. I have not found my soul mate yet, though."
*She looked at him again.*
"Do the humans have soulmates?"

*Kirk pondered the sheer horror the concept of a soulmate provoked in him.
For some reason, he kept thinking about a certain pointy-eared science officer.*
"No," *he said.* "Where I come from, lifelong commitment like that still happens, but it's no longer considered necessary."

*Nessa smiled.*
"As for me, I don't like the idea of being bound to one person for the rest of my life. I enjoy my freedom."

"I'm glad to hear it," *Kirk said, smiling.* "It'd be a shame to keep a pretty think like you locked away."

*She smiled back, blushing at his words.*
"Talking of which.... There is a ball going on tonight. Do you want to go, or would you rather stay here?"

*Kirk tilted his head at her.*
"If you knew me better, you'd know that barring fatal illness or injury, you need never ask that question."
Well... I guess that depends on what's involved in staying here.
*He rose.*
"Will you be going?"

*Nessa smiled and looked up at him, her beautiful eyes were glittering.*
"Oh, I'll only go if you want to go. Haldir told me to stay with you and take care of your needs. What do you want to do?
If you go to the ball, you will meet Haldir again, and his cousin Wild, and maybe some of the others. Or we could find something to do elsewhere. Anything you choose is fine with me."

"After everything I've told you, Nessa, you offer me entirely too much autonomy," *he said, stroking the side of her face.*
"Why don't you tell me what would make you happy?"

*Nessa blushed and looked shyly up at him.*
"I am only a chamber maid, mylord."
*She whispered.*
"I have been a servant all my life. I am not used to think about myself...."

"Well you'd better start," *he said.* "I had no idea elves operated like that. Did you choose to be a chamber maid?"

*Nessa blushed and looked down.*
"Both my parents belonged to the upper aristocracy of Lorien. They both served under the former kings and queens of Lorien. They said it was an honor to serve the royal family. So I was given to the Queen as a servant when I was 4 years old...."

*Kirk's eyebrows rose.*
"That's appalling," *he said.* "You can't just give people away, Nessa. Surely such an advanced society knows that."
*He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.*
"From now on, as far as I'm concerned, you aren't to defer to me as if you're a servant. You do as you want, and you tell me what that is, okay?"

*Nessa blushed and looked up to him with a bright smile.*
"Really? I can say and do what I want to?"
*She gave him a kiss on the cheek in sheer joy.*
"In that case, it would be fun to go to the ball.... if you will join me?"
*She looked up at him again, afraid that he would say no.*

*Kirk smiled. That was easy. He was good at liberation.*
"Of course. I would be honored," *he said.* "Do you need to make any preparations?"

*She looked down at herself, critically. The dress she was wearing now, was good enough for an intimate dinner, but for a ball.... She smiled and snapped her fingers, and was immediately dressed in an elegant, but daring ballgown. Then she put her hair up in an elegant hairdo, before she turned to Captain Kirk with a smile.* "A chamber maid must always be prepared. Are you ready?" ((To the ball?
