*Valmont couldn't hide his smile as he raised the book over her head.*
"You were reading about me?" *he said with saccharine sweetness.* "How touching."

"And yet I'm still disgusted. Oh, come on, what is this, a school yard?" *she chided him as she tried to jump and make a grab for the book.*

"No," *said Valmont, easily keeping the book from her and enjoying her buoyancy,* "it's my home. Which you have invaded, uninvited. Disgust is something, at least, isn't it?"

"There's no such thing as nothing," *she muttered dismissively, propping her balled fists on her hips.* "Must I summon the police?"

"What will you tell them? 'Sir, I bearded this fellow in his own home for the sake of a book I was reading.' Who's in the schoolyard now?"

"That's property of the library which you have obtained without going through the channels of the established operative protocol. Namely--you stole the book. I'd say the gendarmes' policy on theft of any kind is clear."

"One cannot steal from a library," *Valmont scoffed.* "It's what it's for. Besides which--my name is all over it."

*Her eyebrows shot up.*
"As if that makes a difference?"

"I'm hurt," *Valmont said.* "You don't trust me to bring it back? Or is there something in here you don't want me to read, hmm?"

"I want to finish reading it first--it's my right!" *she sniffed.* "And I wouldn't trust you for anything, you son of a bitch."

"Name calling? How unoriginal," *Valmont chided.* "I have a proposal."
*He lowered the book, tucking it back against his chest.*
"You read it to me. Then we finish at the same time."

*Valerie plucked the book from his grasp in a swift motion.*
"Fine. Sit down," *she said, gritting her teeth.*

*Valmont hid his surprise. He hadn't thought she'd go for that.
No, she wouldn't. He smiled.*
"I don't think so," *he said, standing against the door.*

*Valerie opened the book to where SHE had left off and went to stand by the window to let the natural light fall onto the page. Determined, she began to read aloud with a vengeance, her tone even and calm. After a moment, she paused.*
"Do you want me to do the voices?" *she asked with scathing derision.*

*Valmont smirked. Which is, you know, not really worth noting, is it?*
"I'd love to hear you do me."
