"You're wrong," *Figwit said softly.* "It doesn't have to be like that."
*Figwit lived as an idealist without illusions.*

*Wildfeather smiled bitterly. She had seen so much of life that she had no illusions left.*
"I know," *She replied sadly.* "But it is. And there is nothing I can do to stop it."

*Figwit's expression tightened. He had no time for despair; he had grown up in what some might term a hellish dimension, but he had preserved his optimism. He had to.*
"Then you cannot help me," *he said.* "Lorien was built on hope and the idea that Elves could live gracefully, without giving in to the encroachment of the world's sometime ugliness. Without that hope, there is no fight."

*Wildfeather felt something freeze inside her. She turned to him and looked at him with a cold expression in her eyes.*
"And how are you supposed to fight THEM on your own? Without Black Magic? How are you going through the Land of Shadows, if I, who was born and raised there, am not with you as your guide? Do you really think that you can do without me?"

"I don't know anything about this 'Land of Shadows'. No one has mentioned it. What do you know?"

*Wildfeather smiled and shook her head, almost cheerfully.*
"Nuh-uh. Not before you promise me that I can help you too. It is not fun to always be cut off from all the fun just because I am a Dark Elf."

*Figwit sighed.*
"I would never reject help," *he said.* "But indulging in hopelessness and hiding things from me don't serve our cause."

*Wildfeather beamed like a sun.*
"Does that mean I can join you? Oh, thank you!"
*She hugged him in sheer joy, her depression from a second ago completely forgotten.*
"I don't indulge in hopelessness... usually. You just caught me in a weak moment. It's over now. And I don't hide anything from you. I have many sins, but lies are not among them."

*Figwit attempted to adapt to her mood change.*
"But what about this Land of Shadows?" *he prompted.*

*Wild smiled and looked up at him with sparkling eyes.*
"The Land of Shadows are the neighbor country of Lorien. In the beginning of time, Lorien and the Land of Shadows was one country. The first elves lived there peacefully, side by side. Then, THEY attacked us, and the Elves had to choose how to fight them back. Some of them developed White Magic, and other developed Black Magic. They were the ancestors of Light Elves and Dark Elves. Unfortunately some of the Dark Elves became more... you could say evil... than the Light Elves. So to save the existence of both Elven races, the kingdom was separated into two parts. The Dark Elves were more competent to fight against THEM, so they chose to live in the Land of Shadows, where the Devil people came more often."

*Figwit frowned. He had not been told any of this, and in his fifty years of training for this he'd have thought it might have come up as important. Why has this "dark/light" dichotomy been kept secret from him? What were White and Black magic? He only knew the one kind, and it wasn't strictly "magic." He wondered if he'd been cast far out of his depth.*
"So you're saying that to fight the threat at the border, we must recruit these Dark Elves?"

*Wild looked terrified at him.*
"Are you crazy? Most of those guys are really, really evil. You must never trust a Dark Elf. Most of the Dark Elves who live now, hate Light Elves, and will do... well, almost anything to kill them. I am helping you because Leetah's father and my mother were siblings. My mother was forced to marry my father, who was a Dark Elf. But they became happy at last, before they were killed by the trolls. The trolls killed many Dark Elves of my tribe. If you need Black Magic, I am the only person who will help you without trying to kill you afterwards."
*She looked thoughtful for a moment.*
"And still.... there might be another solution as well. But to do that, we will need a demon.... If we can find one who is willing though, it will be a good idea."

*Figwit blinked.*
"I'm trying to figure out why you mentioned having to go through it."

*Wild smiled.*
"One possibility is to strengthen the Elven Army to become more... resistant. And flame-retardant. To do that, we need to make a new race of elves. That's where the demon comes in."
*She looked thoughtful.*
"But if we don't find such a demon, there is another way to get rid of THEM. There is an old, almost forgotten path, leading directly to the cave where THEY live now. It is a very hard and very long way to walk, and we might be discovered by hostile enemies, both Dark Elves and... THEM. I know a poison which we can use to extinct them from the surface of the earth. The ingredients to the potion can be found in the Land of Shadows."

*Figwit quailed at the thought of "creating" another race of Elves. But the second idea sounded promising.*
"Why has no one done this before?"
