*Lizzie looked aghast. What on earth was he saying? She was pretty sure that boys liking boys was even more unnatural than girls that liked girls, but the though of cross-dressing girls that liked boys that liked boys was making her head spin. She put her hand against her forehead in a vain attempt to make it stop.*
"But...ain't that...wrong somehow?"
*Her voice squeaked in desperation.*

*Jeremy looked worried.*
"I'm sorry... did I say too much? It's true but I really meant it in a light hearted way. I don't mean to upset you."
*He refilled her tea quickly in case she needed a drink.*
"What I mentioned were cases of love. I personally don't believe love stops at the gender lines. If two girls make each other happy and trust each other then why does it matter? Same with two guys."
Same with three guys and two girls... or four girls and one guy... or....

*Lizzie took the tea without question and downed it. She wanted to argue, she wanted to tell him he was wrong. But was he? Finally, her voice peeked out nervously.*
"I...uh...how does it...I mean...how do 'ya know when it's love?"

Wow.. she was an innocent.... how unlike...
*Jeremy thought for a few seconds while he watched her face.*
"Personally? I know. I feel like I'm home and safe anytime they are around. Putting a smile on their face makes me happier than anything I could do for myself."

*Lizzie's brow furrowed. That wasn't helpful. She felt that way about a lot of people. She lifted her brow as she eyed him shrewdly.*
"But I feel that way about my brother. And I ain't lookin' to marry him. How do 'ya know when it's that kinda love? Like...the settlin' down kind?"
Do girls even have that kinda thing together?

"Well.. there's also the physical attraction part. You going to see how red you can get my cheeks by making me describe that bit?"
*He was already blushing but tried to look serious. She was looking for help and he didn't seem to be able to provide much. The brief flash of thoughts in regards to physical attraction didn't help either.*

*Lizzie blushed terribly at the suggestion, but the crinkle in her forehead deepened.*
"But...what if 'ya...thought someone was a boy, and liked 'em well enough that way, but then found out they wasn't? Does that mean that I...I mean, ya'd be all...I mean..."
*She looked up to him in desperation.*
" 'Ya know what I mean?"

*He ponders for a moment.*
"I'd say it means you like them well enough in that way. You like the person... not the... bits. I mean you might like the bits.... I mean..."
*He blushes again. She was getting him flustered as he tried to explain without being too crude.*
"What if you liked someone and were physically attracted to them and you thought they were right handed. You find out they are left handed... does that make you stop feeling that way about them?"
*He compulsively takes a sip of his tea and speaks from behind the cup.*
"At least there wouldn't be any awkwardness as you try to sort out the parts."

*He was just starting to make sense. Lizzie found herself nodding, but at the suggestion of sorting out parts she looked taken aback. She decided not to make a fuss of it. He did look terribly embarrassed about the whole thing. And he was trying to help. She chewed on her lip and her eyes met his.*
"But...what if I only find her attractive if she's dressed like a boy?"
*Her eyes widened at her accidental confession and she lowered them to her lap. She continued quietly.*
"I mean...yer attractive enough to me. Doesn't that mean that I like boys?"

*He opens his mouth to speak at her confession but her compliment threw him. He closed his mouth and blinked slowly. After a few minutes Jeremy attempted that whole speech thing again, complete with blushing.*
"Yes. You like boys. Doesn't really mean you can't like girls though. They aren't mutually exclusive.... and... thank you."

*He wasn't the only one blushing. Lizzie felt a bit light-headed. She shrugged, trying to save the conversation that she'd made such a mess of.*
"Well, 'ya are...I mean...I'm sorry, Mister. I didn't mean to go and spoil things. Yer just being such a help and I..."
*She bit her lip, unsure if she was making it better or worse.*
"It's just this whole thing's got me backasswards. I don't know what to think."

"You looked like you needed a friend. Can't leave a pretty Texan wanting."
*He grins and pushes his half eaten plate back a bit.*
"You know what will help? Pie. Pie helps everything. Especially with a bit of ice cream on the side."
*He stood and gave her a half grin as he walked into the kitchen to get her dessert.*

*Lizzie laughed. He was right. Pie did make everything better. Maybe it was exactly what she needed. She nodded and watched him go fetch it. He was attractive, wasn't he? She liked the way he put her at ease and wanted what was best for her. And that he would explain things that polite society wouldn't even acknowledge. No. She liked boys. She could tell. The only reason she liked Alex was that she thought she was a boy. And...and...part of her must still think she is. Or something. Looking quite resolved, she folded her hands and put them on the table as she waited.*
"That's just the thing."

"Personally I feel that variety is the spice of life."
And the spice must flow.
*Jeremy returns quickly from the kitchen. He quickly sets two bowls, each with a large slice of blackberry pie and a equally large scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.*
"Strangest feeling ever... one side of my hand was hot and the other was cold."
*He grins as he whips a spoon out of his apron with a flourish and a wink.*
"Dig in."

*Lizzie grinned and savored the delicious smell before taking the first bite. It was...perfect. Her lashes fluttered in near-ecstasy. She finally opened her eyes to look at him.*
"Aww, Mister...this is...I ain't had nothin' like this in near forever. It's amazin'. You are a great cook."
I could learn a thing or two from 'ya.
