"Funny that, no matter how far you go there's always something that turns up to show you how small the world is and how close to home you really are."
*He offers her a grin and pours the cornbread batter into a greased cast iron pan and slides that into the oven.*
"Didn't have much goin for me back home and if you want to cook... I mean really cook this is the place to learn. And you? Out to see the world or running from something?"
*Jeremy winced and in his own brain was desperately clawing at the air to retract that last sentence. Swallowing he looked up hoping he hadn't pressed too hard.*

*Lizzie nodded and smiled about the being close to home, but as the last words fell, her eyes darkened. She glanced to the door and then to her lap.*
Well, not me... so to say. Well...kinda.
"I...I'm here visitin' my brother. He's workin' horses fer the Opera."

*Jeremy stilled, his hands resting on the counter. His face dropped.*
"Sorry about that... I was too personal. Just got excited hearing someone from back home. Didn't mean to ask an inappropriate question."
*He gave her an apologetic half grin.*
"Can I throw in dessert to make up for it?"

*Lizzie gave a nervous laugh.*
"Ain't nothin' too personal about it. Just wasn't expectin' it. I ain't always shy. As much as Jake would like me to be."
*She grinned and bit her lip.*
"Though I won't say no to dessert. But it ain't necessary. It's just fine to have something from back home. I appreciate it."
*What Jeremy didn't know at the time was that Brandi had left him something in the fridge. A blackberry pie, ready to pop in the oven. On it was a note.*
Thought this might help. She likes it more than pecan, but not by much. Thanks for the other day. You really helped a lot.

"I insist."
*As he ducked around the corner to check the fridge for stuff to fix for dessert Jeremy spies the note. He chuckles softly and shakes his head. Bringing back into the kitchen he puts it into a second oven.*
Glad she's feeling better.
"Will blackberry do?"
*He drains and starts to press the potatoes through a ricer.*
"Jake's your brother I take it?"

*Lizzie's eyes lit up at the word 'blackberries'. She tried to calm herself to answer his question.*
"Yeah, he's my brother al'ight. Can be quite a pain about it too."
*She smiled and peeked into the kitchen.*
" 'Ya really got blackberries in there?"

"I surely do. Maybe next time I'll make some of my grandmother's dewberry cobbler. Especially if I can get some from back home. They got nicknamed 'brazosberries' and were bigger around that your thumb and nothing but juice."
*He peeks over the counter at her, glad her mood has picked up again. Jeremy's lips curl into a little half grin as he realizes something.*
"Didn't mean to presume that there'd be a next time...."

*Lizzie smiled an lowered her eyes as a fresh blush warmed her face.*
"I reckon if you cook half as good as you talk, I wouldn't mind a bit."
*He made her feel better. Safer. Like herself. Then a horrible thought crossed her mind. Looking up with big doe eyes, she spoke softly, worrying about the words.*
"Mister, I hope you don't take this wrong, but...that soup catcher's real, right?"
*She gestured to his facial hair.*

*He laughs, his dimples showing easily.*
"The years and years it took me to grow it... it damn well better be."
*Jeremy works a large handful of shredded cheddar into the mashed potatoes along with some butter and mashed garlic. Pausing to start a fresh pot of water boiling he quickly adds in a corn cob cut in half and seasonings.*
"Having problems with the secretly clean shaven? I hear they are a nefarious lot."

*Lizzie bit her lip, even though she looked relieved.*
"I just...I'm learnin' that things here ain't all what they seem. It gets a might confusing. I didn't mean no offense. Them's mighty fine whiskers. Worth the time fer sure. Make you look..."
Roguish? Like an actual man?
"...charmin'."

*Jeremy blushes as he raises an eyebrow.*
"Charmin... heh. It's been a while since I've been called that."
*Her complement didn't distract him too much though.*
"No offense taken at all. Sounds like you got the wool pulled over your eyes recently."

((Aww, I luvs Alex so muches.))
*Lizzie's eyes grew dark. She sighed and suddenly wondered why the food was taking so long, even though it seemed to be cooking faster than when she did it. Unable to come up with a suitable answer, she snapped indignantly.*
"Ain't your concern. I know better now."
*She pursed her lips and stared at her lap. She didn't mean to be rude, but the whole thing made her anxious. And she wasn't sure she wanted to confess to some nice fella' that she'd been duped by a girl that dresses like a boy.*

*Jeremy started pulling things from their pots and pans to begin plating the meal. He also made up a second plate of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and hot cornbread. This plate he slid to the side.*
"Fair enough. Just being friendly... you looked like you needed one."
*Filling a chilled mug with sweet tea Jeremy brought the mug and a plate around to her table.*
"I made up enough for a second batch... in case you'd like some later. Or if you wanted to take it to a special someone, or Jake."

*Lizzie felt real bad about it suddenly. As he pushed the plate towards her, she grabbed his wrist gently.*
"Geez...I'm sorry, Mister. You ain't been nothin' but hospitable. Thank 'ya."
*She lowered her eyes and quickly withdrew her hand.*
"You're right, 'ya know. About needin' one. I'm afraid I've gone and messed things up something awful."
