*Scarlett sat on the bed, staring at the pair of scissors lying on her desk and twisting one of her long curls around her finger.*

Fitz walked into the room and sat down beside his daughter. "Scarlett, what did Teddy do that made you so angry?" he asked gently, while at the same time letting her know that he was not taking her side.

*She didn't look up.* That's between me and Teddy.

"You revealed his secret. It's only fair that your mother and I hear yours, as well."

Yes, well, life isn't fair, is it, Dad? *She reached out and grabbed the scissors, measuring out how long she wanted her hair to be and bringing the scissors to the mark. Her hair was going to be extremely short.*

He swiftly grabbed her wrist. "What do you think you're doing?"

Cutting off my hair, of course. *She looked up at him, her eyebrows raised.* What do you think I'm doing?

He took the scissors away from her. "What is the matter with you today?"

*She tilted her head back and laughed bitterly.* Nothing is wrong with me, Daddy. Do you know why? Because I'm nothing. And nothing can happen to nothing.

Fitz put an arm around Scarlett. "Sweetheart, tell me what's the matter."

You really want to know? *She rocketed to her feet, moving across the room to her vanity. She leaned on the table and stared at herself in the mirror as she began to speak.* I'm in love, Dad. With the most amazing, wonderful, perfect guy ever. He doesn't know. And he doesn't know any more than my name- though I doubt he even remembers that. But I thought that I could get to know him, that he would notice me, that he might even like me eventually, at least as a friend, and then he might eventually fall in love with me. But guess what? He just got married! To who, you might ask? To Aunt Micaela, of course. And as if that's not bad enough, I had to find out from Mom and ask her to please send my congratulations. And then, when I went to talk to Teddy about it, I found out that he knew- he knew!- because I found the letter from Aunt Micaela under his bed. And he didn't tell me. He knew exactly how I felt, he knew that I would hate to find out in front of other people- and he didn't tell me! *She spun away from the mirror to face her father, her hazel eyes blazing.* So that's what's wrong with me today, Daddy. Are you happy now?

He walked up to his daughter and hugged her. "Oh, Scarlett. I'm so sorry that happened to you, but you're still young. I'm sure you'll meet someone even better, even if you don't think it's possible now!"

I'm still young? Is that supposed to be comforting? *She looked up at him incredulously.* Being young is part of the problem! People don't see me- you don't even really see me- as anything but a little girl.

"That's because you are. You're only seventeen. You don't need to be thinking so much about a man, regardless of how much you love him. He got married. So what? It just means he's too blind to see that you're the perfect girl."

Seventeen is not a child, Dad. And you sound like Teddy. *She groaned.* I'm obviously not the perfect girl if he ended up with someone else before we got to know each other. *She held her hand out for the scissors.* That's why I was about to cut off my hair, to see if a drastic change in appearence wiuld make any difference. I don't understand why Teddy got so bent out of shape when I was telling him my plan to cut it. He threatened to sic Penn and Fabian on me.
