"How was your day, sweetheart?" he asked, setting her down.

Pretty good, Daddy. I got a new doll. *She stuck it out so that he could see.*

He looked at the doll. "It's very pretty!" Fitz turned to Teddy. "How was your day, son?"
"Good." He paused. "Daddy, can I have a piano?"
Fitz blinked. "A piano?" A small smile crept onto his face. "I don't see why not. Yes, of course you may."

*Scarlett looked up at her father with the biggest, roundest, most adorable puppy-dog eyes ever.* Can I have a pony, Daddy?

"Well, a pony's a bit different from a piano. You see, pianoes can make you smarter. Besides, where would we put a pony?"

Ponies make you smarter. And you keep them at their barn! *She pouted and made her little lower lip tremble.*

He squated down. "Sweetheart, there aren't any barns in Paris. And ponies don't really make you smart—besides, they're hard to take care of and smell bad. All a piano does is sit and wait for its owner to play it." He smiled. "It's not that I like Teddy better than you, it's just that his request was a lot more reasonable than yours."

*She pouted even harder, forcing her big hazel eyes to fill up with tears.* But Daaaaaddyyy...

"Scarlett, we don't have enough money for a pony. And you'd have to clean up its messes and feed it and everything."

But-but I could keep it at at the Opera, an'- an' they have stablehands and everything who take care of them... *Her lip trembled even more, and tears were just about to fall.*

He sighed. "Scarlett, it's not the stagehands' responsibility. Besides, it's far too expensive. We aren't exactly a rich family."

But pianos are expensive! *She crossed her chubby little arms and glared at him, the effect less threatening and more adorable than she had meant it to be.* You just like Teddy more 'cuz he's a boy.

He laughed. "Oh, so now I'm a sexist?" he joked. "Darling, a piano does cost a lot, but it doesn't come with extra expenses such as food and lodging. And you know that I love all of you equally."

*She pouted, turned her little back on him, and stomped over to where her dolls were, plopping down on the floor and making a fine show of ignoring him and playing with the dolls.*

He shook his head and then pulled something out of his brief case. Smirking, he turned it over in his hands. "What a shame that Scarlett isn't talking to me. I was going to give her this box of candy because she's cleaned her room without being asked every day this week."
