*Genghis walked back in the tent from his morning exercises, shirtless and glistening, toned muscles warmed pleasantly. He picked up a fig from a platter on the low table as he sat on the rug and pulled out a parchment to study.*

((Okay, funny story first--I start reading and I'm like "Hmmm...sweaty Genghis..." and then from the next room my mother breaks into my thoughts with "EW!" And I turn bright red and I'm like "What? OMG how are you reading this from the next room?" and she's like "...they're operating on a really fat person on TV." "...oh."))
*Emily ducked under the tent flap, her hair still wet from having gone out swimming in a little lake she'd found nearby that no one else seemed to bother with. She snatched a nectarine from the fruitbowl Genghis always kept around and sauntered over towards her rug.*
"'Mornin', Genghis."

((ftw))
*Genghis straightened slightly at her address, but tried to look engrossed in his studies.*
"Good morning indeed."

*Emily pulled the latest edition of Hello! magazine out from under her pillow and stretched out on her stomach to flip through it, biting lightly into the nectarine and sucking at the sweet juice as it welled under the tart skin of the fruit.*
"Royalty will never cease to be messed up in some new, retarded way..." *she muttered as she read.*

*Genghis looked up to her without lifting his head, brow arched perfectly. He wasn't sure if she was trying to say something indirectly about him. Or directly for that matter. With women, you could never tell.*
"What is it that vexes you?"

"Prince Harry went to some costume party dressed as a Nazi. A God-damn NAZI! What an IDIOT! Even if he'd a good-looking idiot. He's an idiot!" *she said wrathfully.*

*Genghis's brow furrowed.*
Nazi?
"Perhaps I am unclear on why this perturbs you. Have the two of you been involved previously?"
*The words lacked any malice, only curiosity as he sought understanding.*

"I wish..." *she said before she caught herself and coughed lightly.* "I mean, no way. I'm a peasant. He's...a prince. And in any case, we'd never meet, anyhow. We run in different circles. Not to mention I used to live on the other side of the earth. It's only that for someone in his political position--to dress up as a Nazi for a PARTY where he knew he would be seen..." *she shook her head, then saw she would have to explain further.*
"Nazis are a radical political party which will arise in Germany some time in the first half of the twentieth century, after the Great War, and their actions will trigger what will become the Second World War. Very obvious uniforms and symbols. They slaughtered Jewish people and other so-called 'undesireables' en masse, for no reason other than their ancestry and faith."

*Genghis listened coolly and when she was done lifted his face to her.*
"Is that truly how you see yourself? A peasant? Even here, with me?"

*Her brow furrowed.*
"What's that got to do with anything?"

I find you more valuable than a common serf.
*Genghis lowered his eyes back to his parchment, trying to keep his voice smooth.*
"Nothing. It was just a question."

*Emily sat up.*
"Your father was a chief, a Khan in your tribe, right? Mine only just got his captaincy--and on a smaller craft--two years ago! He's going on course again in September for an upgrade to a larger plane--er...vessel. And by the time he gets all that done, he'll have two, maybe three years to enjoy it before he retires."
*she shook her head.*
"My family's blessedly middle class. Dad didn't even graduate high school properly. Got his GED or whatever it's called."

*Genghis was suddenly sorry he asked. Why did things have to be so complicated with her? It seemed that way with most things that came out of her mouth. He tried not to think of putting things in it. He pursed his lips and tried to focus on the lines of the ink in front of him.*
"And so to you...there is no way for you to elevate yourself?"

*She shrugged as she flipped through her magazine.*
"I could work very hard and do something at university...something worthwhile. Get on some fast track career and cure cancer or something. But I don't think I'd be happy. Or," *she pointed to a page of her magazine.* "I could marry someone like him for his money. But I don't think I'd be happy there, either. No money in the world can buy me noble blood. At least, legitimate noble blood. I'm pretty sure my great-great-great-great grandmother was the bastard offspring of some earl or baron."

*That was unexpected. Genghis looked up, genuinely interested.*
"I did not know that you placed so much value upon royal blood."
