*That one had no easy answer. He slowly breathed in and just as slowly exhaled*
"I only wanted you to be happy. I thought--"
*He shook his head*
"What I thought then was ridiculous. I was different. I'm not so inhuman now, am I?"

*There was a short pause, one that seemed to lie heavily over the room*
"No," he finally answered, in an oddly hushed whisper. "You're not. But that doesn't change what you did before. I mean, how can you--"
*Hard enough to discuss it with Renn. Moreso when it was the very person responsible*
"Be someone's friend since they're a child and then see them differently later?"

"You say that as though it's never happened before. But it has, countless times. Even with her."
*There was a thoughtful expression on his face now*
"Somehow, though, I don't think that is what frightens you about me."

*A faint blush crept into his cheeks*
"Er--what? Don't be silly, what else could I be talking about?"
*He was starting to back away again, inspite of himself*

*Him doing that was really starting to grate on der Tod's nerves. He grabbed Rudolf's wrist*
"Stop acting like I'm going to hurt you."

*His immediate reaction, of course, was to try and pull away. Der Tod's grip was strong, though.*
"Let go of me!"
*He tried again, to no avail*
"You haven't changed at all. It's just like before!"

"What?! Once again you show that you know nothing!"
*He grabbed Rudolf's other wrist, forcing the other man to face him*
"You're contradicting yourself. You said mere moments ago that I wasn't the same...and now going back on your words?"

*He struggled against the hold on him, but der Tod's grip was freakishly strong.*
"Y--y--y..."
*Spluttering. Not good. This was quickly turning into the last time they'd had a talk.*
"Don't." Was all he managed to articulate.

*Was Rudolf trembling?*
"Stop that...I'm not hurting you. I would never hurt you."
*He loosened his grip on Rudolf's wrists, but didn't let go of him*
"What are you afraid of?"

*He couldn't meet der Tod's eyes again, and found to his shock that he was breathing rather raggedly.*
"I don't know what in hell is the matter...but it's you...every time you get close..."
*A small shudder went through him, though he couldn't tell what brought it on.*

"Look at me."
*He let go of Rudolf's right hand to gently turn his face towards him. Rudolf was rather wide-eyed, but didn't look away*
"It's all right. I understand, now, and I'm sorry I left you feeling so confused. It was never my intent."

*His heart was pounding in his ears. He was surprised that it wasn't echoing through the entire apartment*
"I don't know what to think or feel. And you, you swept in like a whirlwind and left me alone in your wake."
*He heaved a sigh.*
"And now there's this."
*It finally registered that der Tod was touching him. And he didn't mind*

*He felt a stab of guilt, knowing that he had been way too overzealous in the past...and look what it had done.*
"I'm sorry."
*The very sincere words held a note of regret.*
"For everything."
*Without another word, he pulled Rudolf into a hug*

*He stiffened for a moment, the reaction automatic, but then he relaxed, almost sagging in der Tod's arms. This whole mess was emotionally draining, and he felt suddenly tired.
A bit hesitantly, he hugged him back*

*They stood like that for a few moments, held in a comforting embrace. At last, it was der Tod who broke the silence*
"Please forgive me, Rudolf."
