*She laughed and held the still wailing baby on her shoulder.*
"That could help," *she said.* "But what you need to do is walk around and rock her. Talk softly and try not to show how frustrated you are. They pick up on that stuff.*

She nodded. "That makes sense. May I give it a try?" she asked, holding out her arms to take the baby back.

*Renn grinned and passed the baby to her mother.*
"Good luck."

She cocked an eyebrow at her friend, smirking "Was that sarcastic?" Without waiting for a reply, she focused her attention on the baby, gently bouncing her and shushing her, muttering things like, "I'm sorry, honey," or, "It's okay."
After a minute or so with no success, she sighed. "Maybe I just wasn't meant to have children."

*Renn grinned and played along. She sat on the arm of the sofa.*
"Don't say that- of course you were meant to have children!*

She laughed. "How do I go about being a mother with no one to father my child?"

"Just calm the child," *she sang, holding back laughter.*

"Yes, calm the child," she sang back through her giggles.

*She laughed, breaking character.*
"The story of how THIS all happened would scar her for life. It's best kept a secret!"

She snorted. "I wouldn't tell her that! I'd tell her a cleaner version. Something like..." She looked down at the baby and began to sing:
"Someone tell the story, Someone sing the song. Every now and then The country goes a little Wrong... Every now and then A madman's bound To come along. Doesn't stop the story— Story's pretty strong. Doesn't chance the song..."
Much to her surprise, the baby had quieted down and was listening intently.

*Renn laughed.*
"See- you can do it. Aren't babies wonderful?"

She smiled fondly at her little girl. "They are. Although I wonder if it has anything to do with the subject matter of that song." She smirked. "Something tells me that if John were alive, she'd be even worse than Annette."

*Renn smiled a bit sympathetically.*
"Yeah, but she's got me, you and Eponine to spoil her!"

"True, but I'm still going to try not to. And I'll make sure she plays with Aimee plenty so that she doesn't grow up with Only Child Syndrome." She gave a toothy grin. "Really, I don't think I've ever been more grateful to John for being Whore Man."

*Renn laughed, shaking her head at the silliness.*
"Yeah- though I have a feeling life would be a lot less complicated if he'd had his sidekick along with him. Condom boy would come in handy."
