*Jake went to the front door of the modest-looking grey house and knocked, taking off his white stetson.*

*A young woman answered the door with a polite curtsy.*
"Good morning, monsieur. Can I help you? Are you here for someone in particular?"

"Mornin' ma'am. May I speak to your, uh, landlady?"

*The woman bowed her head respectfully.*
"Madame Dahlia, sir? Of course, sir. Please come in."
*She led him into the empty sitting room. There were numerous tables and various oddities like chess boards and tea services.*
"Please wait here, sir, and I will fetch her for you."
*She curtsied and disappeared out a door to the hallway.*

*Jake stood with his hat in his hand and glanced at a nearby chess board that was partway through a game. Scrutinizing the board for a moment, he won the game for the white player within three moves.*

((Oh Jake...I love you.))
*An older woman entered the room, modestly dressed. She looked the man over appraisingly. She spoke plainly, but very politely.*
"Good morning, sir. I hear that you might be looking for a room? I'm afraid we only lease rooms to young ladies. I can recommend another house closer to town if you would like."

*Jake looked to the woman and bowed shortly--these Frenchies liked those kinds of manners.*
"G'mornin', ma'am. I am not lookin' for a room, see...it's my sister. She's...she wants to get a job. I done told her I could take care of her, but she's mighty determined...an' she says you were lookin' fer someone to take care of the vittles for your establishment..."

*Dahlia's brow lifted gently, interested in the turn of the conversation. She tilted her head gently.*
"Oh! You mean the cook position? Yes, I'm afraid we most certainly are in need."
*She looked behind him to the rest of the empty room and closed door.*
"Is she not with you?"

"No ma'am. I made her promise to stay put until I was satisfied she'd be in a good place, with good people."

*Dahlia smiled and nodded.*
"Then you are a good brother and a good man."
*She gestured to a table by a window.*
"Would you like to take some tea or light breakfast and discuss the matter? I want you to be satisfied. We value the quality of life for our young ladies."

"Tea would be fine, thank you ma'am," *he said, nodding.*
"Seems like a fine n' Christian place you n' yer folks is runnin' here."

*Dahlia nodded and smiled sweetly, gesturing to the girl in the doorway to bring a tea service.*
"We believe in providing a safe environment for young girls that are on there own. Paris can be a very...unsavory place. We protect them from that and help them educate themselves and build self-confidence. Would your sister be boarding here as well?"

"No need to burden you with another boarder, ma'am. Like I said, I can provide for her--she just wants to feel like she's helping, I think."

*Once again, Dahlia nodded.*
"I understand, sir. She sounds like a sweet girl. You are...American? Newly arrived?"
((Oh my...I just had the Wilkommen in my brain. "Texas is from America...but she's a very cunning linguist."))

"Yes, but I've been here some months; my sister just arrived this week."
*He hesitated.*
"Her appearance was...unexpected."
