*Virginia looked at her, startled.* "...I didn't mean..." *she reddened.* "...I don't seek...pleasure."

*Sylvia suppressed a small laugh and shook her head gently. Her tone was soft and gentle.*
“That’s not what I meant. You need comfort. It’s in my nature to do so. It’s why I find my work so agreeable.”
*She brushed a lock of wet hair back from her face.*
“I am sorry if I made you nervous. It was not my intention.”

"Not nervous--I just dislike dissappointing people's expectations...I wasn't certain," *she replied with a tentative smile revealing straight white teeth set in a small, child-like mouth.*

*Sylvia touched her cheek gently, admiring her smile.*
“So…let’s find you something to wear.”
*She turned back to a large wardrobe, opening it.*
“I’m afraid that I don’t have anything that you would normally wear, but you’re welcome to look. Take anything you’d like.”

"Anything simple will do..." *Virginia looked, but the simplest she could find was a daringly low gown, sleeveless, light purple, and with fine black lace edging along the decolletage. She gulped lightly and put it on.*

“You’re a vision.”
*Sylvia smiled and moved a screen to reveal a large mirror that Virginia might observe herself.*

*Virginia nearly swallowed her tongue and turned bright pink.* "I...well..." *This was far more daring than even her ball gown had been. And she looked GOOD.*

*Sylvia couldn’t resist a grin; she knew that expression. The one where a woman can truly see her own beauty. And not the kind that’s more than skin deep.*
“We’ll have to keep you hidden away, otherwise the gentlemen are likely to flock to you. You look so charming. And with your sweetness…they would never be able to resist you.”

"Oh, no! I could never...I wouldn't mean to lower myself to--" your level. *She flushed.* "Not that I...I mean..." *She looked perplexed and even curiously baffled.* "You are happy, in that life?"

*Sylvia smiled and offered a dismissive wave of her hand.*
“It’s all right. You are not the first to not understand the appeal of the life I lead. But I do enjoy it, and it seems to find me agreeable as well. I meet interesting people with interesting stories, study arts and sciences that most women are not allowed, read at my leisure and most importantly, I get to make other people feel good. Helping others is very inspirational to me. I don’t know if you can understand it, but it is true.”

*Virginia was quiet for a long moment.* "I can understand. For as long as I can recall, I have wanted a similar life." *She shook her head, blinking back the tears that pricked her eyelids, pinching the bridge of her nose.* "They wouldn't allow me in, now...not now. At one time, perhaps...long ago. Before everything went wrong."

*Sylvia wrapped her arms around Virginia gently, hoping to comfort her.*
“Is there anything I can do? Do you want to talk about it?”

*Virginia shrugged.* "What good would it do, really? I was forced...twice, by different men. I thought the Church might still take me back...I tried. But then...I met Declan. I wanted to help him, too. Only it was...different. And then--" *She looked ashamed.* "He didn't have to force me," *she whispered.* "And then...I thought I loved him. Now I know...I only wanted to help him be a better person." *Her eyes glazed over slightly as she recalled Faye. Her friend--her sister.* "That's not what love is...not true love."

*Sylvia squeezed Virginia’s hands with her own, offering acknowledgment of her situation. Meeting her eyes, she spoke tenderly.*
“You will not be judged or forced by me Virginia. Not ever. You are welcome to stay here as long as you need to. As long as you’d like. I’ll do whatever I can to help you through this.”
