*Holmes guided Irene into his room and shut the door. It still felt odd, having her there. Odder by far than merely taking a client into his room unchaperoned.
He hardly ever thought of women that way. Now it clouded his senses.*
"Irene," *he said, his voice low and urgent.* "I fear for your safety should... should she return. And yet I cannot bring myself to voice methods of keeping you--her--here."

"I understand. I won't ask you to."
*She leaned against the wall*
"There has to be a cure...something..."
*She laughed*
"Sorry, I'll keep on the subject."

*Holmes went to her, placing his hands on her shoulders.*
"Irene. I will find the cure. But I need to see you safe, as well. The other... the woman who is not you does not want to be cured. You need to tell me what you want me to do. Tonight I had to act without your consent. I had to choose to allow her to do as she wished to me, so that she would remain in my sight. But I would rather know what your wishes are."

"My wishes..."
*She sighed*
"I think the reason she was able to torment us was because I don't know my own heart. But I'm not going to let her destroy me. There has to be something...something that will drive her off."

*Holmes' face felt strange. It was probably because he was smiling gently.*
"You've never been one to remain in much doubt about that," *he said.* "I think your reasoning is sound, however. What is there to decide?"

**FEAR TOXIN ALERT**
*Suddenly Holmes took Irene in his arms.*
"Irene," *he said breathlessly.* "Irene... I cannot let you go."

((Sorry!))
*Irene turned to him, starting from her sleep*
"What is it?"

*Holmes had crept into Irene's room through the connecting door. Not because he'd heard anything, or was worried.
In fact, he didn't quite remember making the decision to enter.*
"Irene, I... I can't live another day without you in my arms. Or night."

*Irene stood, looking at him warily*
"That doesn't sound like you..."

*Holmes stared at her with a desperation that was equal parts distressed love and absolute horror at the things that were coming out of his mouth. At the urges he felt. Some part of him had been left untouched, though out of control to stop what he was currently feeling.*
"Only because I was afraid," *he said.* "I assure you, I am no impostor. You may ask me anything you like. Only do not deny me that which I have yearned for since I first saw you."

"But you wouldn't...I don't believe..."
*She looked at him in shock. He wasn't trying to hurt her, that much was clear. But he had never been one to let his emotions rule him- or at least, not to this degree*
"What's happened to you?"

*Holmes grasped her shoulders--gently but firmly--though a muscle in his jaw twitched.*
"I'm only being honest. For the first time in years, Irene. Surely you've felt this thing between us? Why not own up to it?"

*The worst part was, he was right. SHe loved him, and hated herself for it.*
"I know, and we've been cruel to do this to each other. I'm mad, you could wake up with a different person!"

*Holmes cupped her cheek in one hand.*
"The only cruelty is being without you," *he said, his eyes burning feverishly.*
No... No, you--I--can't do this. Not to her.
"Cannot you love me, Irene?"
