Well, it's a start.
Gracie tucked her hand in her pocket and skittered her fingers over the folded blade.
"Soon," she whispered.
She glanced at her reflection in the mirror over the mantle. She knew she was hardly presentable, but few girls that emerged from that school were, whether they'd escaped from its clutches and disguised themselves or not. It had a way of breaking them, really.
But Gracie wasn't broken. She was stronger now, more purposeful, more focused than she ever had been as Annabelle Bamford. She took a deep breath and walked up to the counter.
"I'd like a room. I don't have much money, but I can work it off if you need me to."

*Brandi just smiled and shook her head.*
"Hello. Don't worry about it. We all share the load here. I don't want to spread you too thin, taking what you have if you need it."
*She gathered a key quickly.*
"How long will you be staying with us?"

"As long as it takes," she said gravely. Perhaps graver than she'd meant to.

"Takes to do what?"
*Brandi smiled brightly and handed her the key.*

"Nothing," Gracie said quickly.

"All right, then."
*Brandi was quick to drop it.*
"Here you go, fifth door on your left when you go upstairs. There's always food about and three meals a day. Just let me know if you need anything specific."
*She smiled and lifted her brow.*

*Brandi smiled and shrugged.*
"Just lend a hand when you can. We're pretty informal around here. If you have some time to cook, clean or launder, it'd be much appreciated. But it's all right if you don't."

If I had to live in the poorhouse, I'd do that.
"Whatever you need."

*Brandi nodded and scrunched her nose.*
"No worries, you just make yourself at home. The bathroom is at the end of the hall."

"Thank you."
Gracie went into her room and sat down on the bed.

**NEW DAY, BECAUSE THIS THREAD HAS SUCH AN APPROPRIATE TITLE**
Hallie walked into the inn with Benjamin.
"Here we are, Mr. Barker. Not the most luxurious of inns, but it's rather homey. Lots of people actually live here."

*He smiled pleasantly and looked around.*
"Well, I honestly doubt I could afford luxury." *He joked, walking up to the desk and ringing the bell.*
"Thank you again for bringing me here--I would have gotten hopelessly lost if you hadn't." *He said, laughing a little.*

She blushed. "Oh, it was nothing. It would have been a poor Christian indeed who would have seen you tossing and pitching in that wreck and not sounded the alarm."

((*gigglefit*))
*He smiled, lifting her chin with his right hand.*
"No, really. Thank you." *He pulled his hand away quickly, embarrassed.*
