*Thatcher reclined in the hot water, a table drawn close to the tub bearing an array of long knives and a couple of handguns. He picked one up and inspected it, idly aiming at various targets around the room, squinting down the barrel of the gun with base satisfaction at the cold weight of portable death he held in his hand.*

((Gratuitous dude-ity and gun action. And...he bathes three times a day. This is going to happen a lot.))

***NEW DAY***
*Room smelled of sulfur and decay as smoke crept out of corner of the room. A flash of flame burst out of the darkness, but Death did not step out of the shadow. His voice was an unnatural growl.*
“Thatcher. What have you done? You know that I will strip the skin from your bones before I shove you on to the next life for this.”

"I have only done what I must. As we all do." *Thatcher laid down his gun on the table.* "Are you prepared to offer me the ransom I have asked?"

“Ransom? I didn’t get a ransom from you.”
*His voice was low and dark. Snakes, spiders and insects started creeping from the shadow where Death lurked.*

*Thatcher glanced with mild distaste at the vermin.* "Make me immortal," *he said quietly.* "Do not permit my flesh to decay with age." *He turned his eyes to the shadow in the room.* "Give me my life, forever, and you shall have your son returned to you."

*From the darkness, Death lunged in a sharp motion, his flaming skull fully visible for the first time since he arrived. His eyes burned as hot coals. His teeth opened in animal rage and skeletal fingers outstretched like talons to descend on Thatcher in that tub. But as he lunged in a perfect arch of descent, he was caught in a sticky blackness, as if the shadow itself was straining to hold him back. He fought against it rabidly, but was pulled back into the abnormal blackness of the corner. He was silent for a long moment before his voice seethed again.*
“You know I can’t.”

"I know you can," *stated Thatcher coldly.* "What you can't do is kill me. It is not my time...and thus my life is not yours to take. You can make certain it never is."

*He growled in the darkness.*
“Thatcher. Don’t do something stupid. You know I can’t.”
*The water in the bathtub turned to blood.*

*Thatcher leapt from the tub in disgust, blood streaming in glistening rivulets over his body.* "Then you know someone who CAN. I care not how it is done, only that it is done!" *he hissed.*

*Death fought back amusement. Now was not the time.*
“You know that this request will never work out as you would like it to. Don’t ask me to do this. It’s not worth it. Just give me my son and we’ll forget this ever happened.”
*His mind fell briefly to Demiselle and his heart sank.*

*Thatcher stepped closed, fearless of Death.* "It's worth EVERYTHING." *He smirked.* "When you're prepared to grant my wish, I hope to see you again. Pass on my good wishes to your wife," *he said smoothly.*

*Without warning Death lunged again, his bony fingers wrapped tightly around Thatcher’s throat, bearing down hard.*
“I’ll suck your soul for what you did to her!”
*The bones Death’s hands dissolved into maggots on Thatcher’s neck as Death was pulled back into the darkness.*

*Thatcher flicked the maggots from his skin.* "Impotence. How does it feel to not be able to take the one life you actually WANT?"
