*Laurie entered the entry hall and had a quick word with his housekeeper to prepare for Arielle to move in.*

*Arielle walked in slowly, stopping when she saw the girl. Plastering the most charming smile she could muster onto her face, Arielle swept forward, hand outstretched.* Hello, I don't believe we've met before. I'm Arielle. What's your name?

*Jo looked back at her, then her face cleared.*She must be a servant!Hello, I'm Jo March. *She frowned and her brown eyes filled with tears.* I-I mean I'm Jo Lawrence.

*Arielle smiled sweetly at Jo.* It's lovely to meet you, Jo. Are you Laurie's sister, then? He didn't tell me he had any siblings! This is wonderful, it's like we're sisters!

*Arielle blinked, teh smile fading slowly off her face.* I beg your pardon? You're his wife? There must have been some sort of misunderstanding. *She stopped smiling altogether.* You see, Teddy and I were recently married at Notre Dame.

*Arielle looked down at the piece of paper, reading it quickly. When she looked up again, her face was white, down to her lips.* Why- why- *She took a deep breath.* Well, then, I suppose...I suppose we had best...best go and find him and- and figure it out. *She took another deep breath before beginning to walk along, looking around for Teddy.* Teddy? Teddy, where are you? You have someone here to see you...

*Laurie walked in, removing his gloves.*
"Arielle, I've spoken to the--"
*His voice died away as he spied the all-too-familiar figure seated in an armchair of the parlour.*
"...Jo?" *he said, almost disbelievingly. His face clouded and his eyes darkened with anger and pain for a long few moments before he collected himself and straightened his spine, asking coolly:*
"What are you doing in Paris? Did Aunt March send for you to be with Amy? How did you afford your passage? I thought you had lost all interest in going to Europe, since you turned down my offer to go to London..."
*He caught himself and turned to Arielle.*
"Dear, I'm sorry, have you been introduce to my...old childhood playmate, Josephine March?"
*He turned back to Jo.*
"Jo, this is my wife, Arielle."
*He said the words fiercely, as if hoping they would somehow hurt Jo, even though he knew that she felt no pain in rejecting him, only in knowing that he was the one who was hurt. He reached out an arm and laid it protectively across Arielle's shoulders.*

*Arielle stood quietly, leaning into Laurie's shoulder slightly.* Laurie, she says she's your wife. *Her soft voice was hardly audible, her eyes trained on the floor.* She has the papers.

"Does she, really?" *said Laurie in a tone much like a scoff.* "And she has papers? What this time, Jo? More of your fantastical scribblings wherein the heroine tries to take back everything she said and did? If I can recall correctly, the words you're looking to eat are: "I never wanted to make you care for me so, and I went away to keep you from it if I could," and "I don't know why I can't love you as you want me to. I've tried, but I can't change the feeling, and it would be a lie to say I do when I don't," and let's not forget "you know it's impossible for people to make themselves love other people if they don't." " *Laurie shook his head.* "It's no use, Jo. This is real life, and it can't be like one of your fairytales where it's all a mistake and someone's wearing a disguise and in the end everything is put to right. We move on and do the best we can..." *There was a note of maturity in Laurie's voice as he spoke, denoting the fact that he had grown up in a relatively short time, and there was something of the grown man about him as there had not been the last time Jo has seen him.* "I've done so, Jo...and I'm...happy. You should be the same," *he said, not ungently, but keeping his arm around Arielle's shoulders.*

*Jo bit her lip and her brown eyes filled with tears.* No Laurie Meg,Amy and Beth died in a fire and Marmie started on the gin. When she ran out of money she sold me in marriage to your Grandfather who married me to you. *She held out the paper, her hand trembling.* We have been married nearly three months. See, it says on the certificate.I've had to travel here on no money.*She swayed on the spot.* I haven't eaten since America.*Jo looked dangerously thin.*
