Shadi's eyes widened.
"This entire family needs to learn how to lock their doors," she said, realizing after she said it that this may not, in fact, be Pina's primary concern. "I'm sorry," she said. "I just... how would you go about telling someone that? I wanted you to like me, not run screaming."
She shuddered.
"That must have been awful."
She wasn't sure if it was more or less awful than her experience with Erik and Nadir.

"Well... yes, but still. I probably wouldn't have run screaming."
*She considered this a moment, frowning.*
"Actually, now that I think of it- and oh how I wish I didn't even have to consider this- I probably would have believed you."
*She shook her head.*
"Imagine! My dad and my brother! That should not happen."
*Stopping suddenly, she realized that she hadn't actually explained her reason for being there.*
"So I left. And I didn't really have anywhere else to go."

"Well, he's my brother too," Shadi shuddered. "Though Erik's not my dad, thank goodness. Er, no offense."
It wasn't like Nadir had always shown her his paternal side. Probably wasn't a good time to bring up she'd married him, once, either. It wasn't like she'd known!
"But you came here," she said. "That's good. I'm glad. Actually, I... Pina, d'you remember when we met, and we were talking about running away?"
An idea had seized her, a continuation of her theory that Rochester would be better off--in his own way, the way that seemed to matter--without her.

((I've realized that their icons have similar "Bitch, please" faces. This pleases me greatly.))
*She tilted her head, considering.*
"Were we being serious?"
*But the more she thought about it, the more it worked. Why not? She wanted to get as far from the opera as possible, didn't she? What better way than to just... leave? A grim smile slowly grew on her face.*
"I like this plan."

"I don't know," Shadi shrugged. "Does it matter?"
She was seized with a sort of quiet frenzy. She wasn't running away from anything, not really--she loved Rochester, loved living with him (even if her boredom came out). But like many points in her life, she was seized with the notion that this was what she had to do. To make things right.
"We could do whatever we wanted," she said. "I know there's a circus outside town; I'm sure they need people."

"You want to run away and join the circus?"
*It was something that all children had threatened. (Pina, though, had learned not to. Her father wouldn't have liked that, considering.) But she'd never have thought to actually go through with it.
And then, of course considering her face, she'd probably have an easy time of getting a job as an act, even.
The logical part of her brain was busy complaining that this would never work, that she would turn out like her father, that she was being unreasonable, but she wasn't really in the mood to be reasonable.*
"I think we should."

Shadi beamed at her, seized with the utter perfection of her own idea (as she had been seized, in previous moments, with dressing as a boy to escape the attention of older men and marrying her own father).
"Great," she said. "Now, we need to get a few things straight: what can you do, and are we boys or girls?"

"Um."
*What could she do?*
"I don't know. I mean, I'm kind of freaky looking, that's got to count for something."
*She frowned.*
"And I'm not cutting my my hair."

Shadi had, in truth, rather forgotten about Pina's appearance. And she felt a little ashamed.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'd never ask you to... I hadn't even considered... Maybe the circus is the wrong idea."

"Are you joking? It's perfect."
*She shook her head.*
"It's fine, really. I know that's not what you were suggesting or anything. I mean, it only makes sense, right?"

Shadi frowned slightly. She didn't like the idea of profiting off anyone's misfortune like that.
But she'd been a beggar once, as a child too small to do anything else. And she sure as hell wouldn't have felt any compunction exploiting her own misfortunes.
"If you want," she said dubiously. "I was thinking more... knife throwing, or... I suppose I could throw 'em at you," she said with a smile.

*She raised an eyebrow.*
"I'd rather get out of there alive, if it's all the same to you..."

"Hey, I'm good!" Shadi said indignantly. "It's either that, or pickpocketing, and I'm tired of getting arrested. Anyway, we can work that out later--but I need to know which clothes to bring. D'you think it'd be better to be a boy and a girl, or what?"

"Well, I don't see how it really matters- I'm just going as me. But, I dunno. If you want to be a boy go right ahead. Maybe you should bring some of both, just in case?"
