*Becca sat on a chaise with her feet curled under her, reading a book and biting her nails again. Wearing a plain pale yellow dress and with her hair loose, she looked a picture of youth and innocence.*

Percy and Vianne were shown into the sitting room by a maid.
Percy paused in the doorway, looking quietly at his daughter.
She looked young and fresh, sweet and perfectly naive. As she lifted her head though, he saw something in her eyes that struck him to the core.
His little girl no longer--Rebecca was pure woman.

((Sure.))
"Papa!" *she cried, rising to her feet and running to her father. She threw her arms around his neck in a hearty hug.* "I missed you." *she whispered.*

Percy held her tightly and thanked God she was safe.
"Rebecca..."he murmered, hugging her.
"Are you all right?" he asked, his eyes dark blue with a mixture of rage and seriousness.

*Philippe opened the opposite door to the room and stopped dead in its frame. A rush of cold dread washed over him and he found he could speak no words.*

Percy lifted his head from his daughter's, and his eyes sought Philippe's.
"Bonjour, Monsieur le Comte," he said quietly, tightening his hands on Rebecca's shoulder.

"Papa...I...I'm fine," *she said with soft confusion, drawing back and glancing curiously at her mother, then finally, her husband.*
"Maman? Is something wrong?"
"No, Beetle..." *said Vianne, taking her daughter's hand.* "Your father and I are just concerned."

*Philippe nodded.*
"Sir Percy."
*This seemed too much like last time. But he couldn't, he wouldn't let him take her too. Philippe suddenly felt very, very calm.*
"I trust you are well?"

Percy released Rebecca and stared at Phillippe.
"I think we ought to talk, monsiuer," he said softly.

"Papa, please," *Becca said, laying a staying hand on her father's arm.* "Don't."

Very gently, Percy guided Rebecca into her mother's arms.
"Monsiuer, why would you marry my daughter without coming to me first?" he asked.
His voice was mild, even gentle, but his eyes were only a cold, hard blue.

"Very well, I believe you know where my study is."
*Philippe gestured for him to go. He glanced back and attempted a smile at the women. He then focused on Rebecca.*
"We shall not be long, I promise."

*Becca watched them go and shook her head, her lips a thin line.*
"...men," *she muttered, as if by knowing these two she knew them all.*
"Indeed," *said her mother with a sigh, placing her arm around her daughter's shoulders.* "Sit and we will talk, Becca."

"Maman, they cannot just make my decisions for me, can they?"
"Your father and your husband are powerful and persuasive men. That said..." *Vianne's eyes went soft. She had known the truth of the matter the moment she'd seen Philippe enter the room.* "They both adore you."
*Becca bit her lip and shook her head slowly.*
"Not me, Maman. Not me. You."
*Vianne went to her daughter--who was nearly her height--and looked into her dark eyes, brushing a strand of dark curly hair from her face and cupping her cheek with a gentle palm.*
"Rebecca...you are a talented, intelligent, beautiful young woman in your own right. A woman worthy of such love as you will find offered to you. Do not mistrust it on account of what is in the far distant past. You were not there. It was a difficult time, yes, but the right thing was done, and we all know it."
