*Rebecca leaned upon her cane for a moment.*
"My mother wishes to see me--to have me back at the house...since she heard I'd been ill. For a week, perhaps."

*Philippe's hand clenched in his pocket. So, this was where it would begin.*
"Yes, I'd imagine she would."
*He was silent for a moment. If he forbade her, it would only make the situation the worse. If he let her, there was a chance she would come back.*
"Go then, I cannot stop you."

"You could, though," *she said.* "Look at me, Philippe." *She winced as she pulled back her veil, revealing a thin, pale face with dark circles under haunted and vacant-looking eyes. She hunched over her cane, depending upon it to keep her wholly upright from time to time.*
"You could make me do anything," *she said, looking away to hide the tears in her eyes.*

*He frowned down at her.*
"Perhaps I could."
*He grasped her wrists, feeling how thin they had gotten. She frightened him, more than anything ever had before.*
"But I would not, Oh God Rebecca!"
*His voice rose as he looked at the woman that he loved. It killed him that she was doing this to herself.*
"God, I love you."

*Never had she so utterly felt herself to be her father's daughter as in the moment she found she was able to coolly look him in the eye, disguising her own pain behind a mask of propriety, her voice calm, her tone even.*
"...that is your misfortune, Monsieur le Comte."

*He almost recoiled at her tone. It was numbing, that she could feel this way now. He had made himself more vunerable to her than any other. And she had broken him. He turned away from her, stepping into the sunlight.*
"Just go to your family."
*He spoke, his voice far steadier than his feelings.*
"Maybe they will make you well."

"Perhaps," *she said in a tone devoid of hope, but dry with some spark of sarcasm to liven it up. She began to return to the house, pausing to speak over her shoulder without turning.*
"Please tell Jude that I--tell him that I'll always...that is...I'll never--I'll never stop--" *she sighed.* "Tell him this isn't his fault," *she finished lamely before slowly making her way back into the house. Some time later, she departed with only a small bag of necessary items for her journey.*

*Philippe stayed in the garden for a long while. It was only when he heard the carriages departure that he ventured inside. He stopped in the hall. He felt, he knew how he felt and it killed him. He also knew what he wanted to do. It included a bottle of spirits and a rope. But, he would not. For, it was not just his life that would be affected. He had a child, a child who now just had him in the world. He would stay for his sake. Philippe smiled grimly to himself before heading to the study.*

***NEW DAY***
*As Rebecca settled back at the de Chagny mansion, she still found herself feeling tired, and often restless or ill, though she slept well at night. After several weeks of wondering, she had an epiphany while walking through the garden.*
"...good God..." *she whispered, a smile creeping over her face. She hoped that perhaps, this time, something might be different.*

*Clarisse had stayed clear of the newlyweds. In part for modesty sake but also... her intuition told her that perhaps something was odd. Still, she would not interfer. Again. She dabbed, a little listlessly at the canvas. She hated painting flowers but there was little else to do. She hadn't done anything of interest since the doctor had spoken to her. Anything human was too raw, too like her nephew.*

*Rebecca stopped short, seeing Clarisse seated with her back to her. She hung back almost shyly, still unable to resist peeping at the refined woman's work.*

((I have good plot for her soon. Goood plot.))
*Sensing someone behind her, Clarisse turned around.*
"Mad- Madame Le Comtess."
*She corrected herself sharply.*
