*She glanced up and smiled.*
"Thank you," *she said, taking it with a sheepish expression and wrapping it around her finger.* "Clumsy me."

*Philippe took a step back from her.*
"I came to ask if there was anything that you were desirous of today? I am going into the city for a meeting."

*She was a little taken aback with surprise.*
"Er...no...thank you. I do not want for anything." *she said softly.* "But...thank you."
*She tucked a white rosebud into his buttonhole.*
"It will bloom someday," *she said apologetically with a small smile.* "It's early yet, for the garden."

*Philippe nodded.*
"Very well, I shall see you later."
*Impulsively he leaned forward and brushed her cheek with his lips before turning around and leaving the garden at a quick pace.*

*She stared after him as he left. He'd changed...something. She found it a little difficult to believe that this kind and gentle man who seemed almost shy since last night could really be the same man who'd run a little mad in the midst of a rainstorm and who she'd seen grossly entwined with a strange woman in some kind of blind bodily passion she knew nothing of.
She shuddered at the thought--the memory was clear, though it seemed so distant. But it had only been three days...and how much had changed, now. Her breath quickened, shallowed, and she sat on a cool stone bench, trying to slow the beating of her heart.*
"What's wrong with me?" *she wondered aloud.*

***NEW DAY***
*Becca walked quietly along the gravel paths, admiring the flowers that now bloomed, listening contentedly to the birdsong that rang through the clear air. She sighed--here was the one place outside of the studio that she could really find peace.*

*Philippe glanced up from his window and saw her in the garden below. He vaguely wondered if he could ever see her without it distracting him completely. He greatly doubted it. He stood and picked up the large accounts ledger. Sitting down, he rubbed his forehead, he could feel the beginnings of a headache coming.*

*Rebecca felt she was being watched and looked up just in time to catch a glimpse of her husband at an upper window, but he soon moved out of view. She rubbed her cold arms as she walked, thinking about the utter detachment he seemed to feel for her. She wondered if it must be utter numbness or utter obsession with him--all she had wanted was something closer to normal in between the two. It seemed impossible that he was so great an actor as to completely conceal his feelings for her if they were so great as they had been--he could scarcely keep his hands off of her, and hadn't he secretly been watching her the entire time they'd been married, and who knew of before they were married? He wasn't even watching her, now. The only time before when he'd seemed to forget her was when he'd--
She stopped in her tracks.*
Of course. He has a mistress.
*No wonder she was in some kind of acute pain at being treated as though she barely existed while he was happily engrossed by whatever his work was, his thoughts with whichever faceless woman now saw to his happiness.
Rebecca sat down upon the grass in a small stand of birch trees that hid her from the house, and cried.*

*As the minutes went on Philippe's headache worsened. Finally he gave up and went upstairs to his bedroom.
Leaving his study unlocked.*

*Rebecca was at last forced inside by a rainstorm and wandered aimlessly about the halls. She noticed the door to Philippe's study had been left ajar, and she listened carefully until she realized he wasn't inside. She pushed open the door and peered inside. She moved about the large room, looking at books and the clutter of curios on some of the shelves until her eyes fell upon a letter left open on his desk. She bent her head over it and began to read...*
My God...it's La Sorelli... *Rebecca reeled backwards, leaning against the tall chair behind the desk for support as she grit her teeth against the pain in her heart.*
I should have known...before...and after...it's always her, for him...
*She quickly left the study and went to the north wing, resolving to make herself just as cold as he was.*
I am not the daughter of Percy and Vianne Blakeney for nothing...

*Philippe found the door open and his letter on the desk. He cursed loudly.*
"She thought..."
*He turned and asked a passing servant who told him that she had gone out for a ride. He could hear the rain on the side of the house. Sighing, he left for the stables. He would not have her think that of him. He was amazed that she could think he would do that after everything else.Anger began to rise up within him as he ran to the stables.*

***NEW DAY***
*Becca slowly walked in the shaded part of the path, hitching along with her cane in silence but for the scrape of her boots against the gravel.*

*Philippe moved along with her. The garden was deserted, the well trained servants vanishing at the sight of them. He sighed very softly and turned to her.*
"I wish you would let me help you."

"I see."
*So it had come to this. She hated him for tying her to him. He would not blame her, life would have been far simpler if she had not. But, he loved her so and a small voice reminded him that he would rather have her like this, than not at all. He was selfish, yes but he had never known not to be.*
