"Circumstances are all we have relied on in our short acquaintance," *said Vianne.* "I do not mean to cast doubt upon your honour or your honesty, and I am grateful for the action you have taken to help me despite the inferiority of my situation--you had every right to leave me and every reason to forget me, but you did not." *She rose from her chair and went to Phillipe and took hold of his hands, looking him in the eye.* "Just tell me truly--how much of the night you spoke of can you remember?" *Her voice trembled slightly.* "Because you know I can recall nothing. My future is entirely dependent upon your answer."

*Philippe sighed softly and sat down. Here in front of him was a opportunity. If he lied and swore blind that she had been the women she would likely believe him. Then it was just the case of removing the other man, which had easily been done before. But to lie again, then he would be no better than his father or other members of the societly which he both lived in and loathed. There are greater things than love, honour perhaps and honesty. Honest cannot be brought into question later. The motive he decided had to be the truth rather than the result. Philippe sighed again and looked up into his tormentors eyes.*
I do not know, all I remember was brown hair and the strange sense of not belonging in a place like that. Perhaps my wishes were stronger than my convictions.

*Vianne went white as a ghost and sat down rather quickly on the nearest chair.* "Brown hair...and...and a sense of not belonging in a place like that?" *she repeated faintly.* "You're saying my own scruples and the colour of my hair were the sole factors upon which you decided you must marry me to save my honour?" *Her voice was stronger, with a note of hurt anger and slight hysteria. Her face dropped into her hands for a moment before she threw back her head, stood, and went to the window, unable to face either man behind her.* "And fool I was to do anything so hastily...to believe I was capable of acting in such a fashion...to believe that perhaps we might find happiness out of a dreadful mistake."

*Philippe nodded slowly.*
A mistake perhaps in judgement not in motive. But I was so sure that it was you...
*He trailed off as he noticed his hand unconsciously reach for a whiskey bottle.*

*Vianne turned to look at Phillipe and saw him reaching for the bottle. She placed a hand on his wrist to restrain him.* "I am sorry," *she said in a gentler tone.* "I think somehow I wanted to believe it as well--I had no other way to explain..."

*Philippe looked up at her and then over to Percy.*
And now you do.

*Her hands shook slightly as she removed her wedding band from her left hand and placed it on the desk in front of Phillipe.* "I do," *she said softly.*

*Philippe was silent for a long time.*
Right, well I suppose there is nothing left to say.
*He stood up and left the room.*

*Vianne did not move as Phillipe left the room, nor did she speak. A single tear slid down her cheek, but she turned her face back to the window to hide it, brushing it away in a moment.* "Well." *was all she said at last.*

Percy rose quietly and went to Vianne's side. "I am sorry," he said gently.

*Vianne leaned against the windowsill.* "It's all my own fault...and I've hurt so many by this. I ought to be the one apologizing."

Percy shook his head.
"No, love," he said gently. "How could you know? You did what you believed was right. No one would fault you for that."

"But I ought to have known!" *she said, rather desperately, peering deeply into Percy's solemn blue eyes.* "I have always prided myself on knowing my own mind--on knowing everyone else's as well! When I can no longer trust in myself, how can I trust anyone beyond myself? As you see it has nearly brought us to ruin!"

"You ought to have known?" Percy asked gently. "You, who could not remember anything, was supposed to have drawn upon divine inspiration and simply gained your knowledge thus?"
He shook his head.
"The world is not so great a fool, Vianne."

"Perhaps not," *said Vianne slowly.* "But why can I not remember? There must have been some failing on my part."
