The Orphanage, age six:
I sat in the corner of the orphanage, hoping to god that they wouldn't find me. But they always did. The cruel men who controlled us always had their way. The horrible, horrible beatings...and since my last failed escape, i knew my punishment was coming.
The brutes entered the room, and I shivered in fear. The other girls tried to look away, but I knew they felt sympathy. But just before a hand came down to hit me, I had an idea.
"Hey, wait a minute! I know Kung Fu!"
I suddenly went Matrix on them and soon they were all lying dead at my feet.
"Later, losers", I said to the other orphan girls as I left.

A Brothel, age 15:
I leaned against the wall as the strange man sized me up. He was old enough to be my father, but that wouldn't stop him from wanting to have his way with me.
"I knew this house had many lovely ladies, but I never dreamed the full extent."
He smiled cruelly at me.
"My name is Bill."
"Nice to meet you, Bill."
"I believe I will hire you for the night."
I looked him straight in the eye.
"I'm the bouncer, you moron."

A Bar, age 18
Bill and I sat, quietly drinking our whiskey. It was one of those typical drunken dates where you end up revealing all of your personal secrets.
"I never knew my parents", I said. My name had since been legally changed to Beatrix Kiddo. "At the orphanage, they told me my name was Johanna."
"Johanna what?"
I thought.
"Beaker? Barker? Something like that."
He took out a long thin knife and handed it to me.
"Kiddo", he said, "I think it's time for you to learn the art of murder."

The Deadly Viper Assasination Squad, age 19
"Let me introduce you to the boys", Bill said. He pointed to a handsome young man with false lashes under one eye.
"Alex DeLarge. Code Name: Copperhead. Enjoys his work a little too much, but one of the deadliest youths I've ever known."
He went over to an arrogant looking man in a cowboy hat.
"Jesse James. Code Name: California Mountain Snake. You may have heard of him before."
"I certainly have."
Bill motioned towards a man with a scar, wearing kid gloves and carrying a pimp cane.
"Macheath, also known as Mac the Knife. Code Name: Cottenmouth. The less said about him, the better."
Finally, he gestured towards a scrawny kid of about fifteen.
"The Artful Dodger. Code Name: Sidewinder. Good for intelligence work, but watch your pockets around him."

LOST IN A DESERT DURING THE CIVIL WAR
Elle (a female co-worker with whom I didn't get along) and I had become separated from the group. We thought we were done for- no water or civilization in sight. Until I saw something.
"Hey", I said, "those look like soldiers."
"What uniforms do they wear?" she asked.
"Can't see from here."
They came closer, and Elle got excited.
"They're grey- that's confederate."
She started yelling to them in a bad southern accent.
"Help! We were attacked by the yankees. Our male guides are dead! Up with General Lee!"
The soldiers came closer. They dusted off their uniforms- which were blue. They had appeared grey from a distance because of the sand covering them.
"You must excuse my sister", I said. "She's been out in the sun too long."
((Note- this memory is a ripoff of tribute to The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.))

((Nope. Remember the "nasty incident with union soldiers" she mentioned? This is it. I assume nothing too terrible happened.))
