"No wonder you're taking half of my books," *she said sympathetically.* "But don't you ever want to experience anything for yourself?"

"Well of course. But I have to finish school for my mother's sake, because she never got to." *He said. He'd known this since he was physically about eighteen months.*

"Fair enough," *she said with a shrug. Then an idea seemed to strike her.* "Hey, both my parents were teachers! I could quiz you!"

*He blinked.*
"What?"

"Quiz. You. I'm good at rapid-fire questioning and it's a great way to quickly ascertain someone's knowledge level." *she beamed.* "Plus I'm curious about this whole Death thing. Do you think I could meet your parents? You know, when your Dad gets back from India. If that's where he is."

"Oh, he's not in India. He's... well, I don't know where he is. My mom's pretty normal."
Even if she's a character from Les Miserables...
"I'm Alexei Thenardier."

*She knit her brow.*
"...the name sounds familiar. What other tricks you got up your trousers? Honestly, did you use bouncing stilts or what?" *she peered over the counter at his floatingness.*

"No, I've always been able to teleport."

"Lucky. Is there a knack to it? Could you teach me?"

"Um, I don't think normal people can. But I've taken my sister places, like when she was doing a report on Egypt I took her to the pyramids."

*She held out her hand.*
"Show me someplace better than this."

*He took it tentatively.*
"You might get nauseous." *He warned.* "Hold tight or I could drop you in Siberia or something."
*In a few moments, they were standing in front of the pyramids, except one of them wasn't finished, and lots of people in loincloths were building while people in linen skirts looked on. He blinked.*
"That's never happened before."

"Crickets on a cracker," *she breathed, looking about, wide-eyed, her hand fused to Alexei's.*

*Someone began speaking to them in a language Alexei, for some inexplicable reason, understood.*
"Who are you?" *Asked the overseer, but Alexei had poofed them back to the library. And all was well, as far as time went. It was still the year they'd left Paris in.*
"That's... never happened before." *Without thinking, Alexei had moved them to one of Caesar's triumphal parades. He looked around, fascinated.* "That is so COOL!"

"Wait wait wait, what do you MEAN it hasn't happened before? Don't you know what you're doing?"
*She uttered a small shriek and shrank back against him as they suddenly found themselves in the Colliseum with gladiators battling around them.*
"I DON'T WANT TO MEET YOUR DAD THAT BADLY!"
