*Tony sat alone at a corner table, absently stirring far too much sugar into his coffee.*

***NEW DAY***
*Valerie was on her lunch break and sat in the cafe with a black, strong cup of coffee and a sandwich, reading the book she'd snatched from the library.*

*Valmont entered for his habitual caffeine fix and pretense of reading the paper and stopped suddenly.
It was her.
Well he wasn't going to let her chase him out of his coffee shop. He entered and signaled to the waiter that he wanted his usual. And sat at her table.*
"Missed me, did you?" *he drawled.*

*Valerie picked up her coffee and took a sip, never lifting her eyes from the page.*
"Are you always like this or did I win a crazy, crazy prize?"

"Like what?" *Valmont asked calmly, taking a sip of his coffee.* "Charming and articulate? Yes, thank you. Are you always such a bluestocking?"

*He eyed her. Not too bad. Not an entire mess. But still. It wasn't attractive. Reading.*
"Seems a shame to bring your work home with you."

"Well, like you, I happen to enjoy my vocation to the utmost," *she said with a small smirk before she took a bite of her sandwich.*

"It's more of a hobby, really," *Valmont said, waving a lace-trimmed hand,* "but it's rather consuming."

"No doubt," *she said dryly, turning a page.*

*The fact he couldn't get to her was infuriating. Not that Valmont ever let that show. Much.*
"What are you reading that is so much more fascinating that I?"

"Something about the perverse sexually manipulative social games of the latter half of the 18th century in France--shortly before the fall of the Ancien Régime. One of the characters reminded me of you, actually."

*Valmont smiled.*
"That does sound like me. How flattering. I forgive you."

"Forgive me nothing. The character happens to be a real piece of work."

*Valmont's smile rather resembled a cat's, if cats could smile.*
"Not at all. Your interest is enough."
