Ramsey raised his eyebrows. "Is that so?" He knew better than to get embroiled in a clash of wills - but he had a stubborn temper, and when he got ahold of something he was like a dog with a bone. "Moments ago you berated me for my ungentlemanly conduct. Now you decline my polite and noble offer, the proverbial olive branch of good will? Which do you prefer, Miss Bennet? Please do make up your mind."

"I can no longer be certain of what your notion of polite and noble behaviour is! You, who call yourself a gentleman, would take offense at any insinuations to the opposite effect, and yet you do not hesitate to treat me like some...second-class citizen...who would let you do as you please and remain in mute awe of your station and not utter one word to retain a shred of propriety! You are a gentleman, I am a gentleman's daughter, thus far we are equal. I have not any title to my name, as you have, but if I did I would not use it as a passport to guiltless intrigues and such foul dalliances as you seem to have come to expect from the supposedly weaker sex! Moreover, were I a man of any social strata, I would never treat any woman as you have treated me! Thus I must politely decline your kind and noble offer to see me back to the Opera as my unfortunate tendancy towards becoming propriety leaves me with no choice than to feel nothing other than disgust and contempt for your honourable intentions." *Elizabeth turned on her heel and began to walk stiffly, but swiftly away, biting back her tears of rage.*

Ramsey felt his temper bubbling up inside him, but forced himself to remain where he was. What on earth was wrong with the girl? He had never once made any mention to her class or parentage, nor had he insinuated that she was beneath him. Obviously it was something that bothered her, or else she wouldn't have brought it up.
And why was she so quick to assume he had bad intentions? It seemed there were two kinds of women, he thought as he fixed the horse's reins - those who gave themselves away too freely, and those who believed every man was out to ruin a lady. Was there no middle ground?
Ramsey glanced up at Miss Bennet's rapidly retreating figure. He would let somone else crack her icy exterior.
Seething with anger, Ramsey swung himself up into the saddle and kicked the horse into a gallop, passing Miss Bennet as he did so and riding into the distance.

*Elizabeth tugged at the sleeves of her pellisse and scowled at Ramsey's retreating figure.* "Of all the--!" *she did not trust herself to finish her thought aloud and stood still, trying to calm her temper with deep breaths. A moment later she was striding purposefully back towards the Opera. Until she realized she had no idea in which direction it lay.* "Oh! I wish I'd never come here!" *she wailed inwardly, racking her brains for some of the French she had learned from her paltry at-home schooling at the hands of her enthusiastic but uncapable mother.*

((Aw, hellz naw. And what's funny is that, in all actuality, it would take hours to ride from the Opéra to the Bois de Boulogne!))

((Crap. Now I have to consider letting her be mauled by some pervert in the bushes.))

((He's your character. You get to decide if he's vengeful enough to leave a girl to get molested. ))

((Well, if he doesn't come back, then we won't have the chance for another exciting Sueniverse drama scene...))
Ramsey had no intention of looking back, but something niggling at him make him glance behind. To his surprise, he saw a rough, dirty man sneaking up against the hedge Miss Bennet was walking by.
He let out a shout and spurred his horse to action, charging the brigand. The horse tore across the wide expanse between them, kicking up clods of dirt as Ramsey kicked him ferociously. The man froze, then hastily fled as the horse reared, its hooves pawing the air.
Ramsey gained control of his horse as it stamped and pawed the ground. The beast was tempermental, just like its owner.

*Elizabeth had only time for a puzzled frown as Ramsey's horse came flying back at her.* Surely he's not the kind to be so put out that he'd run me over... *Turning, she saw the ruffian close to her elbow turning to flee. She let out a small cry of surprise which turned into a shriek of terror as the horse bore down upon them and rose, it's deadly iron-shod hooves raking the air mere inches from Elizabeth's face even as she recoiled from both horse and hobo. The hem of her petticoat caught under the heel of her boot, and as she twisted about, she fell awkwardly to the ground, pain shooting through her foot and leg; and, while not enough to cause her to faint, it rendered her pale and speechless as she lay in a crumpled heap on the grass.*

as she recoiled from both horse and hobo. ((XD)) The horse puffed and stamped as Ramsey wheeled him around, sliding out of the saddle quickly and kneeling at Miss Bennet's side. "Are you hurt?" he exclaimed, his anger momentarily forgotten. He saw her skirt pulled up to her knee, her ankle twisted at an odd angle. "May I have your permission to ascertain if there are any breaks?" He didn't wait for a reply, although it would've been the more polite thing to do, and gently took her ankle. "It is not broken," he pronounced after a moment.

((*dies* WILLOUGHBY!)) *Elizabeth gasped in pain as his fingers probed her ankle.* "I think I have only twisted it a little," *she said in a soft, shaking voice.*

((You caught me. )) In one swift movement, Ramsey scooped her up as if she weighed no more than a dried leaf, and set her on the horse's back. "Hold to his mane tightly," he said as he looped the reins over the horse's head, grasping them in his gloved hand as he began walking.

I--I...thank you," *Elizabeth said softly, not meeting his eyes.* "Your extraordinary kindness has been wholly unmerited by me."

"You may not think me a gentleman," Ramsey said over his shoulder, "But surely you don't think me such an indecent human being to allow a young woman to be assailed?"
