*Madame Giry gently brushed the chestnut mare's coat to a glossy shine, wrapped up in her thoughts.*

Ramsey rode his stallion back into the stables, his hair tousled and his cheeks attractively flushed. He dismounted easily and patted the horse's gleaming white neck. He began to remove his coat, dusty from the ride, before he realized he was not alone.
"Oh, I beg your pardon," he said, putting the coat back on. "I didn't know anyone else was here."

"Oh do not mind me, Monsieur," *said Madame Giry with a nod of her head, continuing to groom the horse.*

Ramsey hesitated, then decided that the lady was obviously no shrinking, innocent maid, and surely wouldn't mind seeing him in his shirtsleeves. He removed the jacket, revealing an elegant midnight blue waistcoat.
"Is she yours?" he asked, nodding in the direction of the mare she was standing by.

*Madame Giry gave a short laugh at the idea.* "No, indeed. She belongs to the Opera in general...but she has been here nearly as long as I have. She is a friend, I suppose."

Ramsey quirked an eyebrow as he unsaddled his horse. It was usually done for him, but it was a new and expensive saddle and he did not trust the lanky stablehand with it. "You've been here long? Most of those I meet here seem to be new."

"Coming up on fifteen years, monsieur," *she said, stroking the mare's nose as the beast whickered softly, looking for the sugarcubes she knew were in Madame Giry's pocket.* "I am the ballet mistress here."

"Really!" Ramsey smiled. "I suppose you must have a difficult job, seeing how many dancers there are running around. But I imagine you are more than competent."

"I take great pride in doing my job well, Monsieur." *A smile tilted the corners of her mouth as she thought of her corps de ballet, though they would only see her as the stern mistress.* "The girls can be a handful at times, but they dance well, and are a credit to me and this Opera house."

"I am sure it is because they have such an excellent teacher," he replied, removing the bride from his horse's head. "I can imagine you are a superb dancer. Do you still dance, or are you resigned only to teaching?"

*Madame Giry continued to smile, though a sad wistfulness crept into her eyes.* "I no longer dance publicly, Monsieur. I have taught--I have not danced since I was sixteen."

"Surely this can't be true!" Ramsey exclaimed, a teasing smile crossing his face. "Forgive my boldness, but you look healthy and slender enough to be dancing in the lead of any corps de ballet."

*Madame Giry laughed again and shook her head.* "You are too kind monsieur--in any case it was not appropriate for a widow to dance. They gave me the place out of kindness so I could raise my daughter."
((Oh God, the Tom Jones just popped up on the playlist. *headdesk*))

"Oh, I am sorry for your loss," Ramsey replied, unsure of how long ago the husband had died. A pity she had not remarried, he thought, glancing towards her left hand and seeing no ring. She was past the first flush of youth, but perhaps this only enhanced her beauty.
((I don't know if she's wearing an engagement ring or not... just roll with it...))

((She is--although she wore her wedding ring for years afterwards.))
"You needn't be sorry--my husband lived a good life, when he could. I know he is better off where he is, and have left off my mourning," *she answered truthfully.* "Any struggles I have had since have made me a stronger person."
