"Kip." *She repeated, giving his hand a shake before releasing it. She shifted her weight trying to break the anxious air.*
"So...you know Jake then?" *She smiled, trying to look hopeful. It was pretty much the only thing that she new about him at the moment.*

"Biggest?" *Her brow arched to match her playful grin. She wondered briefly if that meant in age or actual size.*
I guess I still have a long way to figuring him out.

"I mean, he's pretty old," *shrugged Kip.* "He's been grown-up since I can remember."
"He'd be thirty three if his typist wasn't a wishy-washy twerp."

"Oh." *Lark looked him over with a smile.*
"But you're not that young, are you?"
*He couldn't be really old. He was too yummy.*

"Me? No, I'm uh," *he cleared his throat.* "I'm...I'll be twenty-six this September."

"Liar," *came Jake's voice from the next stall. Clearly he'd been listening all along, with some amusement.*

*Lark lifted her brow, fighting back a grin at the awkward position Kip was left in. Her eyes didn't leave him, enjoying the good-natured squirm.*
"Oh..."
*She lifted her voice to the other stall.*
"So what...not a day over twenty, no?"
*Her grin blossomed in good fun.*

"Try eighteen," *came the drawl.*
"Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!" *groaned Kip.*

"Don't fret." *She leaned in to smack him friendly on the shoulder.*
"You don't look it." *Lark whispered playfully, nudging him with her elbow. Straightening, she called loud enough for Jake to hear.*
"Well, if you've been grow his whole life....that'd make you what, fifty? Sixty?"
*She giggled.*
"You must eat awfully well to look like you do."
*She winked at Kip. It was all in fun, of course.*

"Sixty, my a--"
*Jake bit his tongue.*
"Iffin you two're gonna hava go at me, I might as well go and git some real work done," *he grumbled goodnaturedly. Kip grinned.*
"By all means, leave me to escort the lady home. Whereabouts d'ya hang yet hat, Miss Bonnie?" *he said, offering her his arm.* "Will you, er, be retainin' yer garments or have ya a change of clothes?"
*He squinted at what she was wearing.*
"Hey Jake, ain't those your old britches?"
*He nudged Bonnie.*
"Better hope they's bin washed."
"I do bathe on occasion!" protested Jake.*

*Lark's jaw dropped agape, giggling softly.*
"Oh, I see...you're just so eager to be rid of me, that it?" *She called to him. Without waiting for his answer, she scrunched her nose at Kip and squeezed past him, bumping him briefly as she slung herself around the corner to the next stall to look Jake down. Her brow arched, eagerly awaiting the answer, but her smile was warm.*
"So terribly tedious as I am."

"I won't git bored if you don't," *promised Jake with a grin, the smile's warmth fading slightly as he glanced over her shoulder and saw Kip's face lit up like it was Christmas morning. He knew the look in the boy's eye.*
Oh hell.
*He cleared his throat.*
"Rain's stopped. Kip k'n see ya safe back t'the camp, if ya like."

*The glow about her faded slightly at the suggestion. She had rather hoped that he would see her home himself. But it wasn't like she could turn down the boy.*
"Of course." *She nodded, clearing her throat.*
"Just let me change."
*She looked back to the room her other clothes were in with a hint of sadness, but realized that there had also been a promise in his words. Later. Again. And that would have to do. She gave Jake a bright grin and a wink.*
"Wouldn't want you to lose the only clean ones you've got left."
*She scampered across the hall to change.*

*Jake watched her go before forcing himself to turn back to his work. Kip gave a low whistle.*
"Whoa. I...I never...I din't 'spect...such a...whoa."
About sums it up, *thought Jake.*
"...think I gotta chance, Jake?" *asked Kip eagerly.*
"'Pends on what ya wanna take a chance at."
*Kip swallowed.*
"Well, uh...I think I...aw, hell, Jake, don't make me say it."
"A man don't do what you ain't sayin', Kip. La--Ladies are ladies. An' she's a lady. You be sure ya treat her like one."
*Kip nodded.*
"So ya mean, I should court her instead?"
No.
"...yeah. Maybe," *said Jake gruffly, tossing the currying brush back in the box with the others and swinging back up the ladder into the hayloft.* "See ya at home," *he called back, by way of a goodbye.
Kip nodded and stuck his hands in his pockets, scuffing at straw on the ground as he waited for Bonnie.*
