Inside jokes
In case you haven't noticed, we have some funky member titles or other references around here. In case you've wondered about them, allow me to explain... - "masterful virgin" references fanfiction in which the Phantom is amazing in bed, despite having never had sex before in his life. - "in the duggins" was inspired by a rather idiotic attempt by a Suethor to spell "dungeons." That wank can be read right here. - "ingenious pilot" is a reference to "Roule's Ingenious Plane", possibly the best-known Phanwank joke ever. Incidentally, it came from the same wank as the previous phrase. - "Angle of Music" is a joke not limited to Phanwank. Let's face it, we've all seen Erik or Christine turned into a geometric object at least once. - "huge bit of Sue-ness" references my personal favorite Phanwank joke, taken from a Gerry/Emmy fic that was wanked here and here. - "dollhouse of crazy" is, of course, from the amazingly hilarious Phantom of the Opera in 15 Minutes by Cleolinda, lovingly borrowed for one of our themes. - "deceased, please review" comes from this wank.

Profile edits
Here are a few things you might not know how to do if you're new to ProBoards.
To upload an avatar, first create an account at a hosting site like Photobucket or ImageShack (both are completely free) and upload the avatar there. Then, copy the URL of the image into this section of your Modify Profile page here on the 'verse:
To change your display name, go to Modify Profile and then edit this section:
To change themes, go to Modify Profile and select a theme here:

Signing in as Multiple CharactersFor those of you who miss the Alias feature (where it was possible to log in as multiple characters and switch between them) and who don't want to wait for someone to invent something new, there is a (rather clunky) alternative. Here's how it works: Create a different URL for each character. This is done by adding a prefix to the regular url; you can then sign in on that url, and it will remain signed in as you open another tab or window for another character. So if I wanted to play Erik, Shadi and Alex at once, in one browser, I'd set up three tabs with erik.sueniverse.proboards106.comshadi.sueniverse.proboards106.comalex.sueniverse.proboards106.comusing, of course, whatever you like at the beginning. It could even be numbers, but that might be more confusing. Then I'd sign in with each character in their respective tabs, and would be able to switch between the tabs to switch between characters. Your browser will consider each unique url a different site, so it won't kick you out of that account.

This is freaking awesome. It's awesomer than aliases by far.

I found a drawback--if you open a link in a new window, it doesn't have the prefix, and you're not logged in in the new window. Poo.

Even so, it makes barbiesmashing so much more agreeable. So thank you.

But if you open up something, type in the new prefix (if you're already logged in on that site with that prefix), then you're automatically logged in again, and on the same page. At least, in my experience.

I have finally figured out what phanwanking actually is.
Don't be surprised if I start doing it in future.

AvatarsAvatars are the images that pop up next to our posts to let other players know what our characters look like. Okay, everyone knows that. But here are some tips on making them show up and making them look decent. It's easy to find a photo you like, but how do you get it to look right in a 100x100 pixel box? [Note: Yeah, everyone knows all this. But there's always someone who might not, you know?] First, find the photo/drawing/whatever. If you're using an icon someone else made, on another site, it's nice to give them credit somewhere--but you should check their own rules. Anyway, if you have a picture that's not square, and too big, you might want to use one of the editing programs to cut it down to size. Obviously if you have Photoshop or a clone, you're down with this. I do not recommend Paint, which is nearly as ubiquitous as it is useless. If you have MS Office, you can do simple cropping and resizing with Microsoft Office Picture Manager. If you don't have any photo managing software, try pixlr, which is a web-version of Photoshop. Since the area you're working with is so small, it's important to focus on the part you want. Usually, the face. (We're not talking about art here--you're on your own.) What you want is a square, of whatever size, which contains the part of the image you want. To get this, use the crop tool, which usually looks something like this: Drag it into a square by looking at the dimensions in whatever program you're using. Some programs will allow you hold another key, often Shift or Alt, which will make it a square automatically. Once you have your square, resize it to 100x100 pixels. Usually this is in an Edit menu. The biggest problem I see with forum avatars is people not resizing or cropping, so that when the forum shoves the image into that 100x100 square it looks stretched or squashed because the dimensions are not right. There's a way to make them come out right on the forum, if you don't want a square, which I'll get to in a minute. Once you've got your avatar, you need to upload it to a server so that the forum can pull it. Proboards doesn't save all the avatars; they're hosted elsewhere. People tend to use either tinypic or photobucket. The advantage of tinypic is that it doesn't link back to "you" or your album, so it's a little more private. The advantage of photobucket is it is an album, so you can save and view and edit your stuff. It's up to you. Once that's done, you need to put your avvie up here. Go to your "modify profile" page and scroll down to where it says "Avatar URL." In that box does the address of the picture you uploaded, without any of the url/img tags. Just "naked." If your avvie is already a 100x100 square, that should be it. If it's not, you can use the boxes underneath to input the dimensions. No avvie is going to be bigger on any side than 100 pixels, but say you have an image that's 150x100 and you don't want to bother editing it. You can calculate that if the longer side is reduced to 100 pixels, the shorter side should be (roughly) 67 pixels. If you put in those dimensions, the avatar will show up with the right (i.e. not stretched or squashed) dimensions. If you don't, the 150 side will be 100 pixels, and the 100 side will be 100 pixels, so the face will be oddly contorted. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know!
