Declan wandered around the opera house foyer, running a finger over the staircase banister. He examined the people around him, chatting and murmuring in small groups.
Sighing, he sat down on the stairs.

*Virginia saw him and walked slowly over to Declan.* "...hello..." *she said softly.*

Declan immediately stood and brushed himself off, despite the fact it was unnaturally immaculate inside.
He bowed low. "How do you do...?"

*Virginia twisted her fingers together and looked at the ground, swallowing.* "...Faye's dead..." *she whispered.*

Declan narrowed his eyes and tried to look into Virginia's eyes to see if this was the truth. By the way she kept avoiding his gaze, it must have been.
"I'm...sorry for your loss. How are you feeling right now?"

*Virginia shook her head.* "I don't know...I just...I knew I needed to talk to you." *She glanced around the foyer, at all the people.* "...but not here." *She led the way to a small cloakroom nearby.*

Declan followed without uttering a single word.

*Virginia steeled herself for a moment and then twisted the heavy diamond ring off of her left hand, leaving a pale band where Faye's blood hadn't dried upon her skin. She held it out towards Declan.* "I can't marry you." *Her large brown eyes filled with tears.* "I'm so sorry."

Declan merely laughed aloud, gently pushing Virginia's hand away.
"That's a great joke." However, when she began to shake her head, the young man realized she meant it. The muscle in Declan's jaw quivered for a few seconds as he turned his back on Virginia. When he had composed himself, he turned back. His eyes were probing.
"W-What? Why? Why all of a sudden? Was it something I did?" Declan took hold of Virginia's hand firmly.

*Virginia quickly answered in the negative.* "It's...this is all my fault. I should never have said yes...it was the worst kind of lie...not only to you, but to myself, and I'll never forgive myself for having done this to you!"

"A...lie?" Declan strained to say the words.
"So, you never loved me?"

*A tear slid down her cheek.* "No."

Declan looked wildly around him as if searching for an answer. Finally, his eyes fell back on Virginia's face. His gaze hardened considerably as he gritted his teeth in frustration and seized the ring from her hand.
"When will you be true to me?" His voice hinted at a growing fury. He hissed, "I never want to see your face again!" He slammed open the door and gave Virginia one last cold glare before storming out. Declan strode out of the opera house and threw the ring into the river. The diamond glinted brightly in the rays of the sun before the rushing waters consumed it, whisking it away, never to be seen again. Or so we thought.

*Virginia watched him leave, a solemn dullness in her eyes. She turned and left the opera, knowing of only one place she could go to at a time like this--only one person who might understand, and be able to tell her what to do.*

*Enters, a bit panicked*
"Excuse me, has anyone around here seen Virginia?"
