"Why, that the portrait should be of her ruling him."

"Which is why I'm less concerned now," she said. "I don't think she'll let him get away with nothin'."

"And do you think I or my mother would?"

"I don't know. He seems a little incorrigible where you're concerned."
They had by now passed into the portrait gallery, where Megan took a moment to look at the progression of the brothers from babies to adults with a delighted expression.
"You were such a little chunk-"

"Chunk of what?"

"Of baby- oh my god, you were like a little sausage-"

"Hey," said Thor, albeit good-naturedly.

"And lord, your brother was a nerd-"

Thor laughed much too loudly at that and pulled Megan along by the arm a little faster.
"Look- look at this one here-"
It was a pair of portraits of the boys, blossoming unforgivingly into puberty. Loki would cut his hair soon, but it seemed flat on the top regardless, wiry and curly at the bottom; he wielded flimsy sparks of magic. Thor posed lifting Mjölnir in a way that had seemed to make himself look very buff at the time.

"Oh- oh no, that's - Jesus, that's kind of sad."
She looked from the portrait to Thor and back, her expression softening.
"...yeah," she said vaguely. "You were a tough act to follow, weren't you?"

Thor helpfully struck the exact same pose then and there.

"I mean, exactly," she said, gesturing at him. "You're you and he- well, he was that, anyway."

"I've thought of it quite a lot," said Thor, making one futile, tossing-things gesture and continuing down the path. "Oh, it wasn't always bad. Look here," he said, gesturing to the triumphant, Asgardian Rockwell sort of image of Thor and Loki in women's bridal dress, both equally proud as Loki had come up with the harebrained, successful scheme and Thor had pulled it off by hitting a lot of frost giants with his hammer.
They had been young preteens by Midgardian standards.
"After that is when he cut his hair off. I think he thought he was too convincing in Mother's gown."

"...I read this story," she said, realization dawning. "I knew about this one."
She stepped a little closer, frowning.
"Except you guys weren't babies," she continued. "You're always described looking like Volstagg with a hangover and Loki's usually some kind of wiry ginger with a whispery voice who talks you- him- into it for his own amusement..."
Megan turned back to look at him.
"Here you just look like kids playing dress-up..."
By the next portrait, Thor had begun to look like himself, but Loki looked severe and pinched, clasping his own arm in many of the pictures.
"God," she said awkwardly. "My hair must be horrifying to you."

"No," said Thor, spontaneously - though gently - ruffling it, then leaving his arm over her shoulders like an ornament. "We were only kids playing dress-up. It was a spell on Loki's part that got us as far as we did. Not a true glamour - he hadn't figured those out yet. A bit of persuasion. Keep anyone from looking too closely. That, and - our voices hadn't broken."
