She clung to him, but it wasn't with fear. It might have been another thing.
"Oh-" she said in hushed excitement.

"Hang on. This might get a little intense-"
As he ducked under the branch, there was a loud sound like air being sucked into a vacuum, and the creek bed before them seemed to twist off into an endless black expanse until it resembled nothing as much as a ribbon on the wind. Loki flinched despite himself and shut his eyes as he started walking forward.

Teja made a soft "uunh-" noise out of something like fear and clutched his head against her chest with a little bit of fright.

The sucking sound stopped as suddenly as it had begun, replaced by a thin golden light and the sound of distant voices, footsteps, wheels on cobblestones. Loki, his breathing nearly returned to normal, opened his eyes and slowly set her down.
They were in an alley between two impossibly tall yellow-grey stone buildings. The ground, too, was stone, large interlocking slabs of granite between curbs made of sandy-golden blocks fitted together almost as neatly. There was a locked gate behind them made of rain-roughened wood, and the distant sliver of sky above them was purplish and studded with little silvery moons.
"We made it," said Loki.

Teja almost started crying, she was so immediately overwhelmed. Her head turned from one building to the other with her mouth open, then she looked at the sky. She didn't speak at all.

"Darling-"
He hurried to steady her on his arm.

Her fingers dug into his lapel for a bit but she didn't answer or stop staring.

He held out his hands excitedly.

She took them, almost seeming surprised when their skin made contact, though she had an otherwise dulled expression.

He steadied her.
"Are you okay?"
