Her breath caught. She would never be ready for the step they were about to take, but that was why she had to take it. Waiting for the right moment, they'd fall apart in front of her eyes first.
"Then take me."

The nearest thin place was deep in Prospect Park, so the first leap was more preliminary than anything.
"I haven't tried it yet myself," Loki said as he climbed over the fence to investigate the dry creek bed troughed out to carry melting snow water in the early spring. "I can just tell that it's here somewhere-"

"Once I find it, I'll come get you," he said, holding up a conciliatory hand. "It's close. I think this is the only one in the whole borough- aha! Here we are."
He went back to the fence and held out his arms for her to climb on.

The rocky ground crunched under Loki's boots as they approached s tree-shaded, darkened part of the creek bed. He bounced Teja up a little higher to maintain his hold better.
"See that branch? That's it."

He paused to look behind them and make sure no one was coming.
"Lucky for us, I'm the only one who knows quite this many."

"We're in it," he announced.
