"These little shows of affection."

"You don't get those?" He'd made his boyfriend - partner? lover? - sound affectionate enough, and his ex-wife too.

"You make them surprising. Unpredictable. I enjoy that."

"Do you talk like this in your board meetings? Ask your advertising team to make things 'surprising; unpredictable'?" she teased.

"Surprisingly, I'm not sleeping with my board. It's a real plot twist, I know."

"That... genuinely is a little surprising -"

"I was being sincere," said Adrian as they stepped into the elevator.

She looked up at him when the door shut behind him, feeling strangely maudlin.
This little trip, which she was only on because Johannes had, unexpectedly to her if not to anyone else, become fiercely violent over her rejection, was the only time they'd be able to be together like this. She'd never fall in bed beside him otherwise; he lived with his partner and his daughter of her own age, and she lived with Loki and the robot who worked as Adrian's secretary.
"Will you kiss me? For luck, or something like that, I don't know," she asked, with a melancholy laugh.

He looked at her oddly, but nodded and leaned down for the kiss.
"If you're frightened, you can come with me-"

"I'm not frightened, I'm just - not naturally suited to this poly stuff," she said after the kiss broke.

"You should call him," Adrian suggested. "He's probably pacing the floor."
The elevator opened.

"That's not actually what I meant," she asked, wondering what they looked like to anyone in the lobby looking at them; Adrian, of course, looked like any other businessman, maybe a bit flashy and fresh-faced rather than sleazy, but certainly rich. She, on the other hand, looked... well, like someone who liked Kate Bush and hadn't even made an attempt to style her hair.
She waited until they were in the rental car before she elaborated. "I mean that you and I aren't ever going to be alone like this again."

Adrian frowned.
"I imagine we could. I certainly wouldn't mind if we did..."

"Neither of us lives alone. Not even remotely."

"Dan's in and out, Nina has her own life- and I have to travel like this more often than you'd think. You could come with me."
