"And you prince."

"Ah," said Loki, "and there's the catch."
He smiled grimly. "'The hero prince returned', your little maid said. The All-Father didn't bank on his fosterling coming back. A fair assessment, of course, but now he's... what is that term they use on Midgard? Oh, yes- written a check his arse can't cash." His smile broadened to show teeth. "He won't like that I've found a mortal bride, but we don't have much of a choice but to play happy families now, do we?"
Loki leaned over the cradle again.
"Though that should be easy enough with the rest of the family, I'll admit. Thor and I have made amends, you should know."
He glanced up at her.
"It's the All-Father's move, Mother. I won't go begging him for forgiveness. I will grant him civility, but he has no right to forbid me my marriage. I'm not his heir- I'm no longer even in line, I shouldn't think," he said, gesturing down at the babies.

She followed his eye.
"You're their elder. You know how succession works," she said a little drily.
She couldn't think where this animosity came from. He had only wanted to please Odin at the time of his crimes, and now he had been forgiven for them.
"I am pleased you have made up with Thor - more than you know, truly. He was most affected by your lack, and things have been very chilly between him and your father. But I do not understand - why have you made this change from desiring his love to scorning him?"

"Thor walked away from the succession," he countered, ignoring the latter question completely. "Do you suppose the All-Father will simply open his arms and say 'oh, look, my usurping fosterling child has returned, ready the crown for him'? He never intended the throne for me to start with, no matter what he claimed, and after what I've done..."
Loki stopped there and grit his teeth.
"Oh, Hel. He's told the whole realm I'm their savior, hasn't he?"

"Savior is not the word he used, nor I. But the purity of your sacrifice touched the people of Asgard. They have idealized you in your absence. And..."
Frigga hesitated, for moment fearing what might be taken of this truth if she gave it. Her trust won out, but after a terrible moment of warring with herself, remembering the final moment in which she had seen him - the was Thor's hands shook as he declared in pain and fury what Loki had done, Loki blasting Thor to the ground with Gungnir before fleeing without another glance at her, Odin nearby all the while, unable to move or wake.
"Not knowing your true actions, or Odin's, Thor's behavior in refusing the throne has been taken as a statement that he does not feel worthy... beside your memory."

Loki laughed bitterly.
"And the All-Father encouraged the tale to hide his own hand in it."
He waited by the cradle a moment longer and sighed, touching Hodr lightly on the shoulder with a wistful frown.
"I would have words with him, Mother, so that I need no longer burden you with such heavy thoughts after so much time apart. This reunion should have been more glad than it was."

"He says nothing either way, not to encourage or discourage. He keeps much to himself, as he ever did. He lost both sons the day you fell. Thor lingered until he learned the reason for your actions. He blamed the Allfather."
She took Loki's hands in her own.
"But Loki, if you forgave him... Thor would surely do so as well. All would be as it was once, but with no secrets! The boys would grow up in a united family, united as it had never been."

"In the open among us," he said pointedly. "The family. I suppose that's an advancement for us, a nice little web of lies to placate the rest of Asgard-"

Frigga stared at him uncomprehendingly.
"Do you want the truth out?"

"I'm starting to see where I get it from," he said wryly, hugging her.

She held him back but made a slightly huffy yet extremely dignified noise.
"It's taken you a long time to come to terms with that."

"What will be done about my presence here, Mother?"

"I could not say. It certainly wasn't planned for."

"...where do I go from here?" he asked quietly.

"You're home," she said quietly. "That's enough. We'll find a way to inform the kingdom- after giving it some thought."
