"I- I don't know. I can't remember much of it now," he said, rubbing under his hair by force of habit.

She noticed this and gently caught his hand, pushing his hair aside herself. She touched the scar and her hand shook.
"Were you injured? Is that why it took you so long to come to me?"

"I didn't believe I could," he said, "and then I began nursing my bitterness on a steady diet of pretending I would be denied, and the promise of taking Midgard for my own... folly, all of it."
He leaned on her again, like he had as an exhausted child an eternity ago.
"It's only been a year for me, Mother. I don't ask you to excuse my neglect on those grounds, but even if I had rushed back to you, it would have been only months ago, not years."

Frigga's hand in her son's hair froze.
"Loki.... were you falling all that time?" she asked in hushed horror.

"I don't know," he said. "It's possible."

She held him close again.

"Mother..."
He took a few deep breaths.
"I saw the statue in the square," he said finally. "It doesn't look much like me."

She laughed to herself.
"Well, I didn't design it, and with the best designer in the realm gone..."
She gave him a look that was pointed but farcical.

"I didn't think about it at all when Thor told me what the All-Father had done," he said, a little bemused. "There was a boy on the trundle from Nornheim with my name-"

"There are boys across the realms with your name," said Frigga, amused. "I lost my Loki and other mothers gained theirs. It always struck me as funny. Not that you didn't have your own namesake, of course."

He looked confused, though a thin wisp of hope was beginning to take shape.
"...what?"

"It's changed over generations; yours seems not to care, and the current one not even to know, but it was once believed the world came in cycles, never truly ending. We have stories of those it is said came before us, naming our children after the heroes of old." She shrugged lightly and laughed at herself. "I was superstitious when I was young; it influenced my marrying your father, at any rate. In the old stories, Mjolnir belongs to a god named Thor, and so was your brother named. There is an old story about a god who is really a jotun - I named you for him. You might have guessed sooner if you had any interest in those old tales."

He mulled this over for a moment, weighing this interpretation against what his otherself had told him.
"...so I'm not... doomed, necessarily," he said slowly, "merely sharing a name."
Loki sucked the inside of his cheek and nodded.
"I received a rather harsh crash course in those stories on Midgard," he confided. "I thought that perhaps I had to outrun my destiny, but it seems..."
His voice trailed off. He didn't know if he dared to really hope anymore, but the evidence was beginning to stack in a very positive way. He had repaired things with Teja- and Fandral, for that matter; he'd saved Angela's life, and now he had an opportunity to start again in Asgard, better than before...
Loki's thoughts were interrupted by a thin little wail from the other side of the room. It came rushing back to him that he'd almost overturned a cradle containing two sleeping babies during their struggle, and he pulled himself up with saucer-wide eyes.

Frigga stood and went immediately to the cradle to scoop up the offending red nugget, a tiny Baldr with tiny fists, to comfortingly hold him.

Loki stared. He didn't make a sound, but he was starting to cry again.
