By Clark's estimation, he'd been gone about six months since he'd first arrived in Paris to meet with Luthor, since the girl at the newspaper recognized him from her comic books back home.
Six months since the attacks on New York City by Dr. Manhattan.
And in that short span of time, things had gone from bad to worse. He'd left the world in the capable hands, or at least he thought they were capable, of the worlds super heroes. It could go a while without Superman, it had before, it could again.
But as he sat at the kitchen table in the home he grew up in on the planet he considered his home, things didn't look so taken care of.
He sipped his coffee patiently as he skimmed through the Daily Planet.
No articles by Lois Lane.
Not one.
That concerned him as much as the story on the front page "Lex Luthor's campaign gaining speed as he brings on Max Yezpitlek as his running mate. Amanda Waller continues to be a big contributor to the Luthor camp-" he gritted his teeth as he turned the page a large picture of a grinning Luthor standing next to three people, the two he recognized as Yezpitlek and Waller, but the third, a woman whom they claimed to be his Campaign manager he'd never seen before.
"Regina Wilde" he jotted her name down on a list he'd started as he read through half a years worth of newspapers and magazines. He had attempted to use the internet, but the information was to wide spread he needed something quick to get caught up. He was just glad his mother never threw away the weeklies.
"Clark honey, you don't look well," he looked up to see his mom leaning against the door frame "somethin' troubling you?"
"Yea Ma," he sighed "a lot. What is Luthor up to?"
"He doesn't seem like he's up to anything much" she sat down slowly, her poor knee's weren't doing as well as everyone wished they were "honestly darlin he seems like he's on the up and up this time."
"I don't buy it" Clark replied strongly "he's done this sort of thing before, but this time it's bigger" he took another sip of his coffee "President Luthor" he turned a sad eye to his mother "that doesn't sound right does it?"
"No, I can't say it does. But people can change-"
"Not Lex Luthor, not him. He hasn't changed since we were children, he always as a M.O., always. I trust most people in this world more than I probably should, but I do not trust Luthor and there isn't a damn thing, pardon my language, that he can do to change that perception of him."
"Clark" she patted her boy on the shoulders and shook her head "where have you been?"
"I was, well Ma, I was in Apokolips attempting to thwart an invasion of Earth."
"I imagine you succeeded or you wouldn't be here."
Clark smiled "Yes."
"Good, now eat your breakfast" she started to stand.
"Ma?"
"Yes honey?"
"Where's Lois?"
Martha Kent stopped mid stand and sat back down.
"What happened to her?"
"I think that maybe you need to speak with Bruce Wayne, he was the last man to see her a-"
"alive?
"Clark honey I know this must be hard for you to hear, but Lois Lane hasn't been heard from in months. She disappeared pretty quickly after you did, Bruce Wayne said there was a note left by her that said not to worry, but he doesn't seem to believe she left on her own accord."
"If he doesn't believe it, than I don't" he stood up and grabbed his bag.
"Don't do anything irrational dear, this world is still very sensitive after what that man did to New York. People are just trying to cling on to anything that makes it feel safe and if you suddenly show up again blasting orders, well I'm not sure how much that is going to help."
Clark smiled and leaned down to his mother and kissed her cheek "Ma, I'm-" he sighed "I'm not all right, but I promise to take it easy. There's a lot of catching up to do and a lot of wrongs that need to be made right. I love you, I'll visit again soon, promise."
"I know you will dear" she watched as her son exited the house and then flew up in to the sky most likely headed toward Metropolis or possibly New York. She prayed for his safety, slightly upset that he hadn't even touched the breakfast she made for him.
