Vimes was still grumbling when they arrived at Magda's house.
"Just my luck, the one man on the force who outright refused to hire vampires for years and I'm the one who has to talk to all of them..."
He knocked on the door.
"At least this one seems to have a last name."

Mina instinctively reached toward her scarf but said nothing.

His eyes darted over to her neck, but he also remained silent while waiting for Magda.

Magda opened the door a moment later, looking decidedly unvampiric in one of her homespun dresses from the old country, except for the fangs and the fact that, like Mina, she had taken pains to cover her throat. The difference was that Magda's choice of concealment was a comparatively subtle black choker, studded with little embroidered flowers like her bodice.
"Yes?"

"Mrs. Snape? We're with the law, and we have some questions for you."

Magda looked back and forth between them. The man had a very definite police air about him, but the woman seemed a shade off.
"All right, come in," she said after a pause. "I'm afraid se house is a bit of a mess at se moment- I've been tryink to organize things before we leave for Romania."

"Of course."
Vimes took out a photo of the Emcee.
"Did you know this man?"

Magda's mouth set in a grim line as she gestured for them to sit.
"I know of him," she said darkly. "Vhat's he done now?"

The entire place set Mina's nerves on edge. Not that its mistress was apparently a vampire, but that she was plainly a vampire with a knack for shabby domesticity. It just didn't gel.
She nevertheless regarded Mrs. Snape with some suspicion, even though the lady of the house seemed far more choical that Mina had come to believe the female of the species to typically be. Mrs. Snape had a kind of ruddy freshness to her that betrayed her peasant origins, and a build that indicated that she'd probably have run to plump within about ten years had she not been turned, along with red hair and an epidemic of freckles.

"Couldn't have happened to a nicer man," Magda said darkly. She turned and spit into the fire to punctuate her point.

Vimes told her the night he was found.
"Do you happen to remember where you were at the time?"

Mina's lip curled slightly at Mrs. Snape's coarseness and set about focusing on one of the photographs on the wall, showing Mrs. Snape with a deeply unattractive hook-nosed man who fit the vampiric stereotype far better than his wife.

Magda frowned a little and scratched the back of her neck, rippling her hair in the process.
"I vas vistiting my husband at his office," she said, after a long pause.

Vimes took a note of that- he could check the accuracy later.
"I gather there was some bad blood between you and the deceased."
He realized the phrase he had used.
"So to speak."
